From learning new camera techniques to finding your perfect popcorn buddy, members of Boise State University’s Cinema Club give the inside scoop about their community.

Lights, camera, action — Boise State’s Cinema Club has been an open curtain for creativity for local film enthusiasts since 2022.

Whether you’ve got that lightbulb-moment idea for the next feature film, want to build your networking skills or discuss your favorite cult-classics, club members say any Bronco can make the cut.

“We’re not just for film majors, the club is for all people who love cinema,” said Cinema Club President Jaeojah Hunter. “Our goal is to spark curiosity while having fun and meeting new people.”

Hunter detailed the mission and diversity within Cinema Club and how it’s becoming a stepping stone towards finding your role within the art of film.

“Our purpose is to truly bring the film community together,” said Secretary Hunter Haubert. “We all have the opportunity to work together and introduce new projects.”

Outstretching above and beyond the basics, Haubert expressed the club’s goal of teaching the “fundamentals of filmmaking” across campus. Affiliates included that coursework is a necessity, however the sense of community is priceless.

Leadership of the Cinema Club aims for excellence beyond campus and club meetings for its members.

“We’ve been [fundraising] to go to the Sun Valley Film Festival,” Hunter said, expressing the club’s enthusiasm for event planning. “It’s a great opportunity to see the industry standard in real time and network for our members.”

Leadership members shared the rising popularity of their club over the years, and how the best possible opportunities for inspiration and growth are found for their community.

“Being around people with similar interests is what I love about it,” said second-year Film and Television major Manny Monreal. “Seeing events like the Boise State International Film Festival together and being a part of the community [inspires] me a lot.”

Wanting to expand her social circle, third-year Film and Television major Sunny Cridland detailed her gratitude to find that “resting spot” outside of a packed schedule.

“It’s definitely changed my college experience a lot,” Cridland said. “It’s made me so much more outgoing, and I’ve always felt more [introverted] in the past. When I joined Cinema Club, it felt so easy to strike up conversations with anyone there.”

The Cinema Club’s meetings are open to all interested in film, and push their members towards accomplishing and expanding heights within the industry.

“You can do anything you want here, it’s extremely hands-on,” Haubert said. “You want to be a director, you can be one, or a screenwriter. The [possibilities] are endless.”

Haubert underlined the “confidence” members feel being a part of the group and the club’s mission for inclusion across the board.

“We want people to walk away from our [meetings] and know they have the power to do so many things,” Haubert said. “They can make their movie, they can bring anything to [the] screen and to the [team].”

Boise State’s Cinema Club is hosting the Boise International Short Film Festival at the Special Event Center October 26th. The event is open to all students interested.

“We want everyone to be themselves — always,” Haubert added. “Join us and tell your story, we want to be there for you.”
