The sounds of shouting students and their squeaking basketball shoes filled the Bronco Gym in the Kinesiology Building Saturday, Feb.18 as teams of three competed in the Swishmakers Basketball Tournament hosted by the Wishmakers On Campus.

This tournament was the first fundraiser thrown by the Wishmakers On Campus and they hoped to raise awareness of the group, as well as gain new members with the event.  The student organization began in Fall of 2016 and is part of the larger organization, Make-A-Wish Idaho. Their mission is to raise money to grant wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions.

“They are just looking for more students who are interested in helping to support the mission of Make-A-Wish Idaho, join the organization, help advocate on behalf of the mission and host fundraisers,” said Sarah Shinn, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish Idaho. The organization will grant 92 wishes this year alone.

“I really want it to come from people’s hearts,” said Océane Plle, president of the Wishmakers On Campus.

Plle will be leaving in May and is looking for the right people to join and get involved. She wants to create a culture in which students who are motivated by the mission of Make-A-Wish get to come together and do what they love. There are currently six executive team members, including her, who are heading up the organization.

“They all bring something to the table, one is good at photography, one is good at talking, one is good at organizing that way it creates such a good team of people that are motivated to do what they like,” Plle said. Working together they come up with ideas to support the children and mission and the tournament was one of those.

There are more events planned in the future for the Wishmakers, but Plle is unsure of exactly what they will be.

“I’m trying to train the team that’s going to take over next year so next week we are having a meeting with them and they are in charge for the next event in April,” Plle said.

Students who are interested in joining to help with Wishmakers On Campus can find information on their Facebook and Instagram @wishmakers_bsu.
