OPINION: Boise State football does not need Taylen Green to succeed

Former Boise State quarterback, Taylen Green, is headed to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and will be joining the University of Arkansas Razorbacks football squad.

Just two days after winning the 2023 Mountain West Championship and receiving Offensive Player of the Game, Green announced his entrance into the transfer portal

After a visit with the Arkansas team, the former Bronco committed to the team on Dec. 11.

Green finishes his Boise State career with 3,794 yards passing, 1,024 yards rushing and 44 total touchdowns and 15 turnovers.

In his time at Boise State, Green has led the Broncos to two Mountain West Championship games, one MW title and was named freshman of the year in 2022.

Many can look at the loss of Green as one of the most detrimental moments in Boise State football history, however, there is much to be hopeful about for the upcoming season.

There is much to look forward to with this Boise State team.

After Green’s lackluster performance in the beginning of the 2023 season, former head coach Andy Avalos and offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan elected to split playing time between both Green and redshirt freshman quarterback Maddux Madsen

Throughout the season, Madsen was often utilized in the passing game while Green was utilized for his speed and athleticism on designed run plays.

Madsen, who will likely become the team’s starting quarterback next season, finished his 2023 season with an impressive statline despite being a “backup” and suffering a season-ending leg injury.

With 1,191 total yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions, Madsen gave Bronco Nation something to look forward to despite Green’s departure.

There is no denying Green’s absolute athleticism and ability to run the ball, however, there is also no denying the unreliability of Green in pass play situations, throwing nine interceptions throughout last season. Even though it is not ideal to lose Green, the Broncos quarterback room seems to still be in good shape. They have a ton of young talent with Madsen, CJ Tiller and Colt Fulton on the roster. They also have the opportunity to boost their quarterback room with potential new commits

Getting away from the two QB system will be great. We have the running backs so why have a QB that needs to run it. Remember Kellen Moore…..:

BSU can definitely win without a player who quit on his team. Blaming God for him going to Arkansas is not good. He needs to look at how many successful BSU football players are and have been successful in the NFL.

As an Arkansas fan, I expect Greene to flop as the Arkansas qb. Bring on Malachi Singleton!
