Boise State football head coach Andy Avalos has been fired by his alma mater after just three seasons.
Spencer Danielson, Broncos defensive coordinator will serve as interim head coach for the Broncos.
Just one day after the Broncos defeated New Mexico 42-14, and improved to 5-5 on the season and 4-2 in the Mountain West, it was not enough for the Broncos.
Though the Broncos hopes are still alive for a Mountain West Championship, the impending move shows that Boise State is made for more.
Avalos, a former Bronco linebacker, returned to Boise State ahead of the 2021 season after former head coach Bryan Harsin departed for Auburn.
In his time as a player for the Broncos, Avalos led the team in tackles for three straight seasons from 2002-04, and was named a first-team All-WAC player twice. Though he had success in his role as a player, he wasn’t able to produce as a coach.
After a lackluster 7-5 debut season in 2021, things looked to be trending in the right direction in 2022. The Broncos finished the year 10-4 and reached the Mountain West Championship Game where they lost to Fresno State.
Avalos will be departing the Bronco program with a 22-14 record in his tenure at the helm and the Broncos, with two games remaining in the regular season, will look to another leader to take control of the squad.
After entering 2023 as favorites in the Mountain West, the shameful start did not bode well. Since losing to both the University of Washington and University of Central Florida in their first two games, the Broncos season has been an absolute rollercoaster including giving up hefty leads late in games and losing “must-win” matchups.
The Broncos are sitting with a 2024 recruiting class currently ranked 69th nationally and third in the Mountain West. As their coaching personnel is up in the air, the Broncos will likely suffer from this change even more.
As the transfer portal is set to open on December 4, there is still ample time for Bronco players to decide their future as the coaching changes will be sorted in coming months.
