Atkinson out for season and other Bronco football notes

Senior defensive tackle Mike Atkinson is out for the year with a torn ACL, according to Head Coach Chris Petersen. Atkinson finishes the season with 37 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception returned for a touchdown. Atkinson’s backup, redshirt senior Greg Grimes, was injured in the Wyoming game and did not play in the San Diego State game. The Broncos have senior Darren Koontz, junior Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe and true freshman Armand Nance to fill in the rotations at defensive tackle.

Redshirt freshman placekicker Jake Van Ginkel has been dismissed from the team. Originally suspended back for the December bowl game, Van Ginkel did not make the 105 man roster for fall camp, was able to rejoin the team once the season started and then was suspended for the San Diego State game. Van Ginkel will not be allowed back onto the roster.

Sophomore safety Lee Hightower and true freshman tight end Hayden Plinke continue to be indefinitely suspended from the team for violating team rules, who originally missed the Wyoming game and are now on their third week of suspension. Redshirt freshman Darian Thompson has been filled as Hightower’s replacement.
