Titus Young has had a rough weekend, and won’t be landing on another NFL roster anytime soon. The former Boise State standout wide receiver was arrested twice in 15 hours by the Moreno Valley Police Department near his hometown of Los Angeles on May 5.   According to the reports, Young was arrested for a driving under the influence early Sunday morning, and after being released, was arrested again for attempting to take back his black Mustang from an impound lot later that afternoon. He was charged with burglary.   Young was released by the Detroit Lions, who drafted him in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft, for what the franchise determined as irreconcilable differences. Young lashed out at the coaching staff via Twitter and was promptly released on Feb. 4.   “Oh I’m not done, if y’all going to cut me let me go. I’m tired of the threats,” Young tweeted about the Lions.   The Lions coaching staff sent Young home three times, once for punching... ...

With recent scientific data now linking concussions to brain damage later in life, concussion awareness has never been higher in professional sports. With the recent death of All-Pro linebacker Junior Seau, and only last week the murder-suicide involving Jovan Belcher of the Kansas City, concussion safety is now a hot-bed topic for all contact sports. In the state of Idaho, elected legislators began taking notice in March 2010, when the first bill regarding concussion safety was introduced to the House. House Bill 676 was first proposed by Rep. Elaine Smith (D) in order to instate guidelines for concussion awareness education training for coaches, athletes and any one involved with prep athletes. The Bill, which was signed into law on July 1, 2010 by Governor Butch Otter, states that the state board of education will develop guidelines with the Idaho High School Activities Association to prevent and handle concussions in student athletes. Now, under state law, each student athlete is required to complete a concussion and head injury information sheet, and... ...

After six years as a member of the Boise State football team, senior running back D.J. Harper knows a thing, or two, about senior day. On the Broncos’ first play from scrimmage, Harper weaved through Colorado State defenders on his way to an 80-yard touchdown run. Harper finished with 107 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in Boise State’s 42-14 win over Colorado State. Redshirt junior quarterback Joe Southwick completed 17 of 20 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns through the air. “That’s exactly what I was hoping for. I told myself, ‘All right let’s make something happen on your last game on the blue,” Harper said following the win. The Broncos dominated in every facet from the kickoff, taking a 35-0 lead over the Rams in the first half. Boise State’s defense, one of the only consistencies this season, limited Colorado State to 229 total yards of offense in the win. Senior cornerback Jamar Taylor finished his career on the blue with one interception and three tackles.... ...

Facing their most formidable opponent thus far in the young season, the Boise State men’s basketball team defeated Oakland University (1-2) with an 88-80 victory in Taco Bell Arena. The Broncos improve to 2-0 on the season, and put their undefeated record on the line against Louisiana-LaFayette this Sunday at 1 p.m. at Taco Bell Arena. “Our guys did a good job of moving the ball, and we got some good looks. We’re a team of runs and as a coach you tell them to keep shooting,” said Boise State head coach Leon Rice. Sophomore forward Anthony Drmic scored 25 points for the Broncos, reaching the 20-point mark for the fourth time in his career. Drmic missed his career high by one point, which he reached last season against Idaho. Guards Jeff Elorriaga and Derrick Marks had 17 and points respectively, while only one Boise State starter finished outside of double figures (Ryan Watkins). Eleven of Elorriaga’s 17 career-high points came in the second half during a 22-6 run by... ...

Anthony Drmic may be the heart of the Boise State men’s basketball team, but sophomore guard Derrick Marks is undoubtedly the soul. In the Broncos’ 75-55 exhibition victory over Saint Martin’s, Marks finished with 14 points on 3-of-9 shooting along with “six assists. Boise State had four players in double figures – Marks, Drmic (12), Ryan Watkins (14) and Igor Hadziomerovic (17), who led all scorers. The only bright spot for Saint Martin’s in the loss was guard Roger O’Neil, who led Saints’ scorers with 14 points and two assists. “Exhibitions are tough,” said Boise State Head Coach Leon Rice. “We did a pretty good job of creating turnovers.” Along with the rest of the Boise State team, Marks struggled finishing at the rim in the first half. Despite starting the game 1-4 from the field, however, Marks was able to put his stamp on every facet of the contest imaginable. With his blinding speed and undeniably quick hands, Marks finds himself in a leadership role for the Broncos. Since... ...

Two short months ago, the 2012-13 Boise State football season was over. With one close loss to Michigan State in the opening game of the season, Bronco Nation was on the verge of dismemberment. However, after winning seven straight games and climbing to 19th in the AP poll, talk of a possible Bowl Championship Series run is back in Boise. Before any talks of bowling can continue for the Broncos (7-1, 4-0 MWC), they must win the Mountain West Conference outright and defeat San Diego State (6-3, 4-1 MWC), who is riding a four game winning streak against conference opponents. The Aztecs will depend on a resounding defensive strategy and precise offensive attack from the following key players in order to ruin Boise State’s January bowling dreams. Jake Fely, Linebacker The Aztecs became bowl eligible for the third consecutive season after their 24-13 win over UNLV last week, largely due to the defensive clinic performed by sophomore linebacker Jake Fely. He finished with 11 tackles and 2.0 sacks for the... ...

For the fifth straight time, redshirt senior running back D.J. Harper, and the rest of the Boise State football team, are Milk Jug Champions. The Broncos (5-1, 2-0 MWC) defeated Fresno State 20-10, allowing the class of 2012 to finish without losing to the Bulldogs. Harper had a rushing touchdown in each of the five games as a Bronco. “It’s a great feeling. It’s a great rivalry and I’ve always loved playing against these guys,” said Harper, who finished with 129 yards and one touchdown on the ground. “They’re a great opponent to play against.” Quarterback Joe Southwick completed 11 passes, while giving up an interception for the Broncos. He finished with 113 yards and one touchdown through the air. Now, more than ever, it is evident that the Broncos have parted from their “shoot ‘em up” ways, and transformed into a team reliant on a solid two back running game and a stingy defense. Head Coach Chris Petersen emphasized the importance of the emerging star in redshirt freshman running... ...

With both the Boise State Broncos (3-1, 1-0) and Fresno State (4-2, 2-0) entering Saturday’s matchup undefeated in the Mountain West Conference, a few strong individual performances can make the difference between a conference crown and a lost season. The Bulldogs have lost 15 straight games against teams ranked in the top 25 and will look to these players for a much needed boost over the Broncos. Derek Carr, Quarterback Since being named Fresno State’s starting quarterback in 2011, Derek Carr – brother of 2001 No. 1 overall draft choice David Carr – has asserted himself as one of the elite passers in all of college football. Last season, Carr threw for 3,544 yards and 26 touchdowns, while maintaining a 62.6 percent completion percentage. Carr is 8-11 as a starter, but has been the victim of facing some of the toughest defenses in the country over , such as Nebraska, California, Ole Miss, Boise State and Oregon. In their matchup last October in Fresno, Calif., the Broncos held Carr without... ...

Week one ended in utter disappointment, and the lives of all Bronco fans are over. I think it’s time to end the sob story. Michigan State may have handed the Boise State football team their first opening day loss in over four years, but should fans really think this season is a loss? Not even close. Many analysts still believe the Broncos have a chance to make a Bowl Championship Series game this year (not likely). Since the birth of the “Kellen Moore Era”, Bronco Nation has been crowded with fans who don’t know a first down from the line of scrimmage. During the time when Dan Hawkins reigned supreme in Boise, Idahoans were still used to Western Athletic Conference dominance, but BCS Bowls and national coverage were dreams that never looked obtainable by the Broncos. Now, the program is under a lesser spotlight in college football and the purity of Bronco football has been restored. The real fans will still tailgate every Saturday in the stadium parking lots whether... ...

Just when everything seemed to be going perfectly, the Boise State football team was hit with the most brutal penalty enforced by the governing body of the NCAA: graduation. After four years of supreme dominance by Heisman Trophy candidate Kellen Moore, the Broncos are now in the midst of a transition into a completely new and uncertain era. Last week, redshirt junior Joe Southwick was named the Broncos starting quarterback after a long battle with fellow slingers Nick Patti, Grant Hendrick and Jimmy Laughrea this summer. Patti, the freshman, is expected to redshirt, according to Chris Petersen. So Southwick is the starter, we get it. No other quarterback had seen the field as much as him, great. But the transition to the Danville, Calif. native will not be a smooth one. Coach Petersen hasn’t had to worry about a change at quarterback since his second season as head coach. The first time Petersen was involved with selecting a new starting quarterback, the Broncos had just won their first Fiesta Bowl... ...

John Engel: @BSU_Engel for full Boise State combine coverage. Every year, the NFL Scouting Combine is used as a showcase for the top football players in the nation. Many players, like former Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore, depend on the combine to make a last standing impression on team officials before entering the draft. Boise State’s representation at the combine were as follows: Moore, offensive lineman and preseason all-american Nate Potter, running back Doug Martin, defensive back George Iloka, defensive end Tyrone Crawford, linebacker Shea McClellin and defensive tackle Billy Winn. Holding the Broncos’ consensus highest draft stock, Doug Martin finished first among participating running backs in the 225 pound bench press with 28 repetitions. Martin is expected to be taken in the first or second round, but was unable to challenge his main competitors at the position due to injury. Notably, Trent Richardson of Alabama and Lamar Miller of Miami did not compete. Former Utah State running back Robert Turbin, who entered the draft following his junior season in... ...
