What happens when you give 16 random people a stage, 20 slides that rotate every 15 seconds and 5 minutes to talk about whatever they want?

Ignition.

If you’d like to take part in an inferno of ideas, you’ll want to join the many who are hoping to get tickets to Ignite Boise 3, happening Thursday, Nov. 12, in the Egyptian Theater.

“Ignite Boise is put together by a handful of local entrepreneurs, geeks and generally creative people looking to contribute to Boise’s culture of ideas.” according to its website.

“Ignite was started in Seattle in 2006 by Brady Forrest and Bre Pettis. Since then, hundreds of 5 minute talks have been given across the world. There are thriving Ignite communities in Seattle, Portland, Paris, Baltimore, NYC, and now, Boise.”

Boise State student Andrew Choifrine attended Ignite Boise 2. “I love it, I think it keeps people concise and that means it’s always interesting and if it’s not, then you move on to the next presenter,” said Choufrine. “It’s interesting people, talking about interesting things, in short bursts.”

Ignite Boise won the praise of Mayor Dave Bieter who proclaimed July 16 to be, “Ignite Boise Day,” in part because “Ignite Boise reflects the truth that Boise is the birthplace of big ideas, the cradle of innovation, and simply the best place to lead a balanced life of meaningful work and inspirational play,” according to the Mayoral Proclamation.

Chris Blanchard is a graduate of Boise State University and is the co-founder of Ignite Boise. Blanchard currently is professional staff in the Dean’s office of the College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs at Boise State University.

“We thought it was a great opportunity to take the time to get some smart people to talk about things they are passionate about and try to spark some creativity to get people to think about old problems in new ways,” said Blanchard.

Ignite Boise offers a great utility to students according to the Associate Director of the Career Center at Boise State, Alex Gutierrez.

When asked how Ignite Boise could be useful for students, Gutierrez said, “[Ignite is good for] looking at ideas and what other people are thinking about, but also for the connections and getting involved with different people in the community,” Gutierrez said. “Especially if you want to get connected and know what’s happening.”

Ignite Boise 2 caught the attention of State Senator Dean Cameron of Rupert, Idaho who heard of the event on Twitter. Cameron described the Ignite experience as, “a room filled with energetic, exciting, entrepreneurial-minded people who are creative [...] It really causes the imagination to blossom in ways that you can be creative and have fun at the same time,” Cameron said.

Ignite attracts presenters, sponsors and an audience by promoting itself solely on social media websites like Twitter and Facebook, with a goal of creating word of mouth buzz. Ignite Boise 2 packed the Egyptian Theater with an estimated 750 people according to Blanchard.

There is no cost to attend Ignite Boise, but if you’re hoping to get tickets, get to the Egyptian early. General admission opens at 6:30 p.m. presentations start at 7.

Maybe we’re just not ready for technology.

I was sitting in The Arbiter office today using one of the Macintosh computers. I was killing time surfing the internet before a meeting. With each stroke I made on the keyboard, the screen flickered. A very small, faint, flicker that was just barely noticeable. I grew more and more annoyed as the flickers continued with each letter I entered. What started off as a small annoyance quickly grew, and before long, I was going insane.

“What is your friggin’ glitch?” I was saying in my head. “Don’t those advertisements say that ‘Macs just work?’ You’re working on something, all right. You’re working on giving me eye cancer!”

At the time, it was obviously the computer’s fault for making my eye twitch out of my skull. I wasn’t even surfing the internet anymore. Instead, I was fixated on the screen’s relationship with the keyboard. Suddenly, it became obvious. The USB cord was just barely connected into the keyboard. Now, I’m not an I.T. professional, and I never claimed to be one, but once the USB cord was firmly in place, the screen stopped flickering. It was user error of some kind. I picked up my left eyeball off of the ground, and logged on to Twitter to tell my followers about the delicious tuna submarine sandwich I had thirty minutes prior.

Our dependence on technology in our culture is spellbinding.

Yes, Captain Obvious, I know.

What is interesting, however, is that we never remind ourselves how dependent we are on technology until it fails us in the middle of a research paper 20 minutes before the assignment is due. Then we get angry, not with ourselves, but at the screen. Our culture is so dependent on technology sometimes we may even forget it was humans that invented and propelled technology into being the most important tool of the century. We use technology, and the internet more specifically, to make communication easier. And it has made communication easier. That’s why I’ve decided to take advantage.

Deadbeat Report is a new podcast hosted by The Arbiter, and self-produced by yours truly. The fifteen-minute, bi-weekly show deals with technology, pop culture and the current events that drive our fast-paced lifestyles.

Podcasts are not a new technology, but they certainly seem to be neglected. Podcasts and other internet-based audio shows have quickly been replaced with video streams. Deadbeat Report hopes to revive the medium by adding comedic twists, interesting production and thought-provoking opinions that compel listeners to interact by providing feedback.

To listen to Deadbeat Report, check out the official blog at deadbeatreport.wordpress.com, or, keep checking the Arbiter Web site each week for content related to the show. Follow the show on Twitter, username @deadbeatreport.

Man, it’s hard to write with one eye. Maybe I should see a doctor.

With more than 11,000 alumni, the COBE is one of about 4 percent of all business schools in the world to be recognized by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Earlier this month, the COBE teamed up with the Europäisches Institut für Postgraduate Bildung an der Technischen Universität Dresden (Dresden University of Technology) in Dresden to host a weeklong MBA residency in commercial real estate in Boise. Known as the Dresden Project, the program brought Germans to Boise to learn about commercial real estate and residential development. Participants met with real estate brokers, Boise city council members and experienced the culture of Boise.

“I think it’s a pretty good idea because you can learn the German language and get to know how their economy works,” Katerine Ruffing, an international student at BSU from the Universität des Saarlandes (University of Saarland) in Germany, said.

Jana Lepple, another student from Germany, agrees with Ruffing.

“It’s a good idea because it helps (foster) communication and the exchange of knowledge,” Lepple said. Like Ruffing, Lepple is also from the University of Saarland, located about 65 miles from Mannheim.

In addition to the Dresden Project, the COBE will be working with the Business School of Applied Science at the University of Heidelberg for the sixth annual Heidelberg Project, a program that lets Idaho businesses participate in a marketing study and business analysis to see how successful their goods and services might be if they were marketed in Europe. The project, also in collaboration with the Idaho Small Business Development Center and TECenter, will run from February to March 2010.

Students and professors at both universities will conduct research for Idaho companies on potential European markets, write reports, lead two 30-minute video conferences and complete final reports for participating businesses. Each business will pay $995 to participate in the project.

Lepple thinks both the Dresden and Heidelberg Projects will have lasting benefits in improving US-German relations, and allow for exposure to world culture.

“It helps make progress between the two cultures,” Lepple said.

According to the CIA’s World Factbook, Germany has the world’s fifth-largest economy, and the largest in Europe, with an annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of about $2.918 trillion.

Founded in 1965, the COBE currently boasts 2,927 undergraduate students and 203 graduate students. With more than 11,000 alumni, the COBE is one of about 4 percent of all business schools in the world to be recognized by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Boise State is the only school in the Treasure Valley to hold this recognition.

Eager crowds gathered outside of the Prairie Dog Production Playhouse, excited for the night’s production of “Space Trek: The Wrath of Juan.” Anticipation for show time was made evident in the chattering among audience members of all ages.

When the doors opened, the crowd was greeted with a cheerful hello and a smile, the perfect start to an evening of laughs, smiles and yummy food. Upon entering the humble theater, audience members found their seats at tables adorned with baskets of popcorn.

“I was really surprised by the tables and the food. I really liked it,” said first time attendee, Bill Grant. “The environment is a lot more comfortable and less formal.”

The informality of the evening continued as an impromptu birthday celebration ensued. The entire audience was asked to participate in singing “Happy Birthday” to a guest who chose to spend their special night at the theater. As a family oriented environment, Prairie Dog Productions emphasizes the special role of audience participation in their theater experience.

As the curtain rose, actors took the stage, after which the audience was taken on an intergalactic journey. “Space Trek: The Wrath of Juan,” a Prairie Dog Playhouse original, is a spoof of “Star Trek.” As would be expected, many Star Trek junkies were in the audience. The subject matter was presented in an entertaining way, so people who didn’t know much about “Star Trek” could still enjoy the play. The goal of “Space Trek” was simple, but weighted by some heavy responsibility. Together, the hero and audience members had to save the planet of Amazomida.

The theater’s staple of audience participation was displayed once again when two children were pulled from the crowd to fulfill a simple, interactive role in the play. The kids even got their own costumes – red shirts, which made them a part of the “good guy” team. The looks on their faces were priceless and the involvement from the audience made everyone feel at ease.

The script offered humor for both the kids and adults, with references from Top Ramen Noodles, to making a spoof song of the famous TV commercial of Free Credit Report.com.

After the play wrapped up, the actors took their final bows and mingled with the crowd. Gifted yet gracious performers shook hands and showed their gratitude to audience members for coming to the show.

“It was a wonderful performance with amazing actors,” Hannah Curtis, another first time attendee said. “I loved the laid back atmosphere and references to current pop culture.”

The price for an evening at what is considered to be “Idaho’s Family Theatre” is only $10 for students and $13 for nonstudents, making the evening affordable. Prairie Dog Productions doesn’t just offer presentations of talent in acting, directing and producing, but they also offer themselves to the community. This summer, PDP will offer a three-week camp called “Camp Laff-A-Lotta” for kids 5 years of age and up. The camp runs from July 20-Aug. 7.

For more information about PDP and upcoming plays and events please visit their Website at pdplayhouse.com. Information in regards to their “Camp Laff-A-Lotta” is also on their Website.

It has been days since the 2009 Miss USA Pageant; still it lingers in the media spotlight. The odd thing is not the amount of attention this pageant has attracted, but rather the fact that our new Miss USA, Kristen Dalton, isn’t the source of the attention. Instead, first runner-up Miss California, Carrie Prejean, has become the hot topic of discussion on American airwaves following a controversial on-stage answer.

Pageants define themselves as an opportunity for women to promote their individual causes and celebrate their unique accomplishments. The Miss USA Pageant has been recognized as being a premier international pageant organization helping to develop the future of bright young women, testing their knowledge of current events, and their ability to successfully represent the United States in the Miss Universe competition.

This is where the controversy begins. Should Miss USA be a woman who speaks her mind, and thus follow what she believes in her heart; or should she be politically correct as a representation of our diverse country? The pageant heated up after celebrity judge, Perez Hilton, asked the final on-stage question to Miss California, “Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage, do you think every state should follow suit, why or why not?, ” Hilton asked.

Instant debate sparked when Prejean responded with the following, “Well I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land that you can choose same sex marriage or opposite marriage, and you know what, in my country and in, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there. But that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think that it should be between a man and a woman.”

Prejean has since reported to several national news outlets that she believes she lost the crown because of her response, but still would not change her answer if given another chance.

After this falling out, the question must be asked, should pageantry move away from questions that put contestants on the spot, defending their personal values and beliefs?

Or are these questions in place to test the ability of our future queen to appropriately represent the entire U.S. culture on a national level?

The fact is, Carrie Prejean was not deprived of the crown based solely on her answer to Mr. Perez’s question.

The Miss USA Pageant celebrity judges included a collection of 12 media savvy personalities from different professions who know what it takes to be in the spotlight. This year’s judges put their vote on Kristen Dalton, as being the all-around package. As a collective they believed she would best represent our country out of the 51 contestants competing.

Reevaluate the facts behind the controversy and take a look at the woman who was actually crowned Miss USA. There may be further insight as to why she captured this honor.

Kristen Dalton is a 22-year-old graduate from East Carolina University. She served as Vice-President of the Psychology Honor Society and Vice-President of Leadership for ODK National Leadership Honors Society

at ECU.

Dalton is also dedicated to mission work around the world and plans to assist with an Aids Campaign in South Africa.

BAGHDAD – Six years after the U.S. overthrew Saddam Hussein’s government, tens of thousands of Iraqis gathered in the rain in Iraq’s capital Thursday April 9, to mark the anniversary and renew calls for an

American withdrawal

The demonstrators came in response to calls by Muqtada al-Sadr, the influential Shiite cleric who has long decried the U.S. military’s occupation, but there were also Sunni Muslims in the crowd.

Draped in Iraqi flags and chanting, protesters packed Baghdad’s Firdous Square, where six years ago a crowd cheered the destruction of a statue of Saddam.

Infant survives Baghdad car bombing that killed 8

BAGHDAD – A car bomb ripped through the Shiite district of Kadhemiyah Tuesday, April 7 killing eight people and wounding 20 just a day after a string of bombings left 32 dead and more than 130 wounded in the

Iraqi capital.

An infant survived, but no one knew its name or age, whether its mother had survived her wounds, or whether the dead driver in the black car was its father.

Abu Haider, who sells parts and accessories for motorbikes, told McClatchy Newspapers he’d rescued the child. He was in his shop when the explosion knocked him to the ground. Through the flames, haze and destruction, he spotted the crying child lying on the pavement near the baby’s mother, who was wounded and bleeding profusely. He grabbed the infant and took it to a nearby home for safety and ran back to save the mother. But Iraqi Security Forces blocked the way.

CIA bars private contractors from questioning terror suspects

WASHINGTON – CIA Director Leon Panetta on Thursday April 9, told employees of the spy agency that private contractors will no longer be permitted to interrogate suspected terrorists and that the agency is seeking to close down what remains of its secret network of detention centers.

In an e-mail to employees, Panetta said he had notified the Senate and House intelligence committees that private contractors would no longer conduct interrogations of what he called “captured terrorists.”

Panetta’s decision follows expressions of concern by some lawmakers about the CIA’s use of contract interrogators, one of whom, David Passaro, was convicted in 2006 of abusing an Afghan detainee in 2003 at a remote U.S. base in Afghanistan. The detainee later died.

Group says global warming could hurt corn revenues

WASHINGTON – Global warming could rob the U.S. economy of $1.4 billion a year in lost corn production alone, a national environmental group estimated in a report released Thursday April 9.

The Environment America study, based on government and university data, projects warming temperatures will reduce yields of the nation’s biggest crop by 3 percent in the Midwest and the South, compared to projected yields without further

global warming.

Iowa would be hit hardest, losing $259 million a year in corn revenues, followed by Illinois at $243 million.

California, which leads the country in agriculture but doesn’t grow much corn, would take an estimated $4.7 million hit. The study doesn’t directly address other crops, but one of its main sources, a 2008 government report on the effects of warming on agriculture and natural resources, suggests that California’s signature fruit and vegetable harvests could suffer even more than corn if temperatures rise.

April snows bring May… gutter flows? The weather is blowing my mind, and my face, off, so I’ll just jump right into this.

Just spent $9 on a bunch of vintage Rolling Stone magazines, great hip-hop records, a plaque (don’t ask) and a few other things. Where, might you ask, would a young man such as myself find such a bargain? The Boise Public Library holds its annual booksale this weekend, in the warehouse on Capital, next to the Anne Frank Memorial. The sale offers tons of weird shit: VHS, 8-track, and regular cassettes; weird knick-knacks; thousands of “throw-away” books; luggage, video games, typewriters; more records than are worth your time; probably a lot off dust. The sale continues through Sunday and on that day, everything will be half of – or so I understand.

If you’re calling me in regard to a Poison T-shirt I have for sale, please consider the following anecdote:

April, 2008. After a friend (Jaymes Crowe, an artist/musician living in Oakland now, or so I hear) turns me on to the full potential of Craigslist – the real benefits of anonymity and humor – I make a fake post with the contact information of my then-roommate, Zak Hella. The post read like this:

“FREE – 4-Man Caterpillar Costume

Originally made this for a Chinese New-Year parade but my friends chickened out at the last minute. Now it’s just taking up space in my living room – I can’t even sit down!”

Zak received 20+ calls in the first hour. Finally, he asked one caller: “What are you going to do with this costume?” The caller replies: “I don’t know… wear it around my backyard?” Anyway…

March, 2009. I begin receiving many, many anonymous calls that go something like this:

Caller (yelling): “Where’s the Poison T-shirt? Where is it?”

Me (confused): “What?”

Caller (yelling): “[Obscenities].”

I eventually piece together I’m being pranked, but decide to make the best of it. To find out who is pranking me – with a hunch in mind – I send a text out to a few sneaky kittens: “Hey man, did you hear I have a Poison T-shirt for sale?” Only one person replied – Zak Hella. His text said this:

“Hey man, did you hear every rose has its thorn?”

With that in mind, I am in the market for a Poison T-shirt, for one reason and one reason only – to prove Zak wrong.

The show at Grainey’s Basement Sunday went off without a hitch. That venue is killer! While embedded in the heart of 6th and Main (BOOOOO) it’s got a ton of amazing punk-rock memorabilia, a great dance floor, and killer sound. Saw DJ Eric Rhodes for the first time and he really got me moving. Talk of Rhodes touring with ATTN and In the Shadow of the Mountain abounds, at least for one show. It would be a fairly obnoxious tour, considering the two bands preceding the DJ set would most likely be the only ones dancing in the dives we’ll be playing.

Last night, did a little more sampling of the new kitchen menu at the Modern – it is so choice. Had the trout/dill/cucumber/lemon pita with creme fraiche (side note: WTF is creme fraiche?). Had many of the tartinis last week, and I gotta say: the Modern is a full-service destination by now. You could stay there for weeks – if you’re floating the cash – wtihout going anywhere.

Tuesday, I finally saw new Boise band Black Cloud. The band features members of The Franklin Cover-Up, Behold the White Horse, Fighting Bears By Hand, Songs From the Radio, etc. They pretty much rip. While not as slow as I’d expected, considering the immediate influences of Gaza, Black Sheep Wall, Jument, etc., they really bring some heavy funk. Heston, on drums, has tightened up considerably since the last time I saw him. They sound a like a Minor Times/Botch/Converge baby child, and certainly hold their own.

The Franklin Cover-Up, too, stepped it up: they’ve dropped one guitar and changed their bass player. They sound more comfortable and rocking.

The band of note from that show, however, was El Cerdo new-incarnation Elitist. Heavy, heavy, heavy, fall-on-your-face vocals, dirty-soul drumming, louder than god. As one member from another band joked: “They only play with bands who have vintage equipment.” Whether or not that is true, heavy music fans should check these guys out.

The new music venue at 28th and Davis is tiny and has three rules:

No Drugs

No Alcohol

No Assholes

Rule #2 might be a problem for a lot of Boise music dudes (I saw Cantrell, Bug, and Luke there, not to mention Jeff, and all the band dudes) but it’s a pretty cool place. Bigger than the Myrtle Morgue, but not nearly as punk. The ceiling is low and constrained and as a result the cymbals really cut. But the shape of the room makes guitars sound dead when wearing ear plugs. It’s a brutal trade… can you take it?

Played the VAC last night with In the Shadow of the Mountain. Broke my bass drum head at probably the most crucial moment of bass drumming, but flipped the drum around for a quick fix. Also on the bill was Finn Riggins (ripping as always) Low Red Land, and The Universal. The Universal headlined,, with good reason. They ripped, totally comfortable, together, loud, pretty, and solid. That new shiny drumset is so pretty I wanted to kiss it. But I didn’t. Thanks to Sam at the VAC and thanks to everyone for coming out on such a pitiful Thurs.

What’s going on this weekend? For once, I don’t have any plans, but I know a few things going on:

Seattle crooner Damien Jurado is at the Neurolux tonight, with the standard (yawn) set from DJ Revolve coming on later.

There is a secret show at Calabozo featuring Hummingbird of Death and Pile of Maggot Infested Viscera. Do you not know where this place is? I don’t think you’re supposed to.

Sunday at the Knitting Factory: The Maine, 3oh!3, Family Force 5, Hit The Lights, A Rocket To The Moon. Probably a lot of money. Probably a lot of fun.

“Hotel for Dogs” and “PUSH” are playing at the Egyptian all weekend.

For the second year in a row, Boise State University will host the African American Read-in celebrating Black History Month.

The event will be held Feb. 18 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the Student Union Building at the Brava! Stage.

Organizers of the event hope that by hosting the event in an accessible area, around lunchtime, students will be able to participate.

Together, the event is being sponsored by the English department, the Cultural Center, the Idaho Black History Museum, Student Activities and the Black Student Alliance who hope to make this year’s event a memorable one as it honors the birthday of Noble and Pulitzer prize-winning author,

Toni Morrison.

“Our main goal is to draw students’ attention to the literary merits of African American writers in the United States, including those authors from Idaho,” English professor Dora Ramirez-Dhoore said.

ˇ

The Read-in allows participants five minutes to share a piece of literature in which they appreciate, or have created themselves. The readings support a vast range of genres including poetry, autobiographies, critical essays and even personal narratives concerning African American authors.

“It’s a great way to introduce, celebrate and remember the writings that African American authors have contributed during the last century,” Ramirez-Dhoore said. “Specifically, the English department at BSU is encouraging instructors to incorporate African American literary works into their curriculum during the month of February.”

While last year’s read-in only attracted a little more than 30 participants out of the thousands of students on campus, the fact is, it’s being offered.

Currently, there are 49 states and several countries participating in the read-in. However, some colleges don’t always offer events like this to students.

“In the four years I was there [U of I], I don’t recall ever hearing about a read-in for Black History Month,” Jill Vance, a 2008 University of Idaho graduate said.

There is no cost associated with the read-in and students are welcome to pop in throughout the read-in. Students can sign up today or request more information by contacting Ramirez-Dhoore at doraramirez-dhoore@boisestate.edu or by visiting the

Culture Center.

In its conception, the event was sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English, and was quickly co-sponsored by the National Council of

Teachers of English.

The International Reading Association endorses the read-in, which requires local results to be reported as a participant classification.

Between commercials of abusive flowers (which sounds exactly how it is) and Chester the cheetah being devious (which sounds exactly like it isn’t) we got a glimpse at regularly-aging rocker Bruce Springsteen. While at certain moments the performance reminded one why The Hold Steady might be the most overrated band in America, it also reminded of how out of hand rock concerts can be. We waded through the Scylla and Charybdis of half time for you, bringing you play-by-play coverage of the event.

1) Really-into-it Guy

Not sure, but a bunch of people in the front rows seemed to be wearing similar T-shirts. This guy, a possibly-product-placed bro, knew exactly when to pump his hand in front of the camera.

2) Struggling-to-stay-fresh-in-a-suit Bro

There’s nothing like wearing your latest from The Men’s Wearhouse to a high-energy Bruce Springsteen show. Struggling against the surging crowd behind you while keeping your Windsor knot tight is just a ton of fun.

3) Bruce slams his crotch into America

What really troubled us here was the cameraman; later in the performance, they cut back to him and he seemed to be struggling.

4) Bouncy Gal

Oh, there just happens to be a camera on this buxom young lass.

5) The Saxophone Warlock

Not sure if this is the same guy from the “Dancing in the Dark” music video, but it looks an awful lot like him.

6) Double-broken-wrists Gal

At least she got these sweet pink casts. I hope she doesn’t get knocked over by Really-into-it Guy.

7) Max Weinberg possibly brings along the horn section from Late Night

This can’t be verified at the moment, but we see the trademark baldhead of Mark Pender and hat of LaBamba.

 Bruce’s windmill arms

I am worried about his shoulder, though (old joke).

9) Way-too-into Gal

I’m almost afraid to tell her there were forty-two Super Bowls before this one. She did know every word, though.

10) “Lighters” appearing at the same moment as a choir

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v671/aspiretoreduce/superbowl10.jpg" border="0" alt=""Lighters" appearing at the same moment as a choir">

Not sure if these were trigged on wirelessly at a certain moment, or if the audience was instructed to wave them at a certain moment, but it was as planned as Bruce’s initial guitar toss. We pretty much tuned out by this point.

11) Bruce and Steve “fight”

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v671/aspiretoreduce/superbowl11.jpg" border="0" alt="Bruce and Steve "fight"">

This was the end of the show for us.
