The Boise State women’s soccer team got their 2nd conference win of the season, their 7th overall on the season to improve to 7-4-2 on the year.
On Friday evening the Broncos defeated the Wyoming Cowgirl 2-1 in front of a pack crowd to win their 2nd game in a row and move to 2-1 in conference play.
The Broncos were led by #17 senior mid fielder Katy Oehring in the victory. Katy, who is a four year starter, had an excellent performance Friday evening. She got the Broncos off and running when in the 26th minute of the game she fired a long shot that went straight to the back of the net that scored the game’s first goal and gave the Broncos the early lead. It was in fact Katy’s first goal of the season.
“Yeah it’s very exciting” Oehring said. “We have been working on that actually all week our coach telling us have the midfields get some long range shots so we can open up some through balls to the forwards and I happened to get one in so I was pretty excited about that.”
Katy as a midfielder is in charge of both playing offensive as well as defense for the Broncos so she has to work extra hard in order to help her team.
“You have to be aware of all angles of the ball because even while you are attacking you have to be aware of where you need to be once it turns and becomes a defensive play.” Oehring said.
Katy had a great game for the Broncos not only offensively with her goal but defensively as well. She was all over the field for Boise State and was giving Wyoming fits all game long by playing standout defensive and her impact was felt all over the field.
” For me I would like to say to I am little more conservative I like to play on the defensive side.” Oehring said. But its always really exciting to get in there and have a shot on the goal.”
As a senior on the team Oehring is one of the most experienced members of the team and a leader and always tries and does her best for the team.
“I try to be vocally and try and set a pace for everybody.” Oehring said.
Katy has set up a lot of her teammates goals and has done so much non stat wise that have been pivotal in the Broncos success this season. Boise State head coach Jim Thomas recognizes all the hard work that Katy contributes to the team.
“For Oehring to get a goal its just nice for the game to reward her for all the little things that maybe some people don’t see head coach Jim Thomas said.
The Broncos will be in action again next Friday when they host San Jose State.
