Fresno State wins big in Vegas

The Fresno State women’s basketball walked away the big winners in Las Vegas over the weekend and captured the Mountain West conference tournament championship. They defeated the top overall seed and regular season conference champions the San Diego State Aztecs 76-70. It was a very closely contested game but in the end it was the bulldogs who would prevail with the victory.

This was the Bulldogs’ second victory over the Aztecs this season and snapped their 17 game winning streak they had going since Jan 13. The road to victory for the Bulldogs was quite the interesting one. They opened with a first round smashing of Boise State 72-55. In the semi-finals the women would have their toughest game to date and narrowly pulled off the victory by the slimmest of margins over Wyoming 63-62. Then finally in the championship game Fresno State would fulfill a dream and win the prestigious Mountain West tournament. Even though the Bulldogs were the number two seed going into this tournament this win was an unlikely one. The San Diego State Aztecs were the huge favorite to win the tournament. They had been dominate in conference all season long had been beating everyone by big margins including the Bulldogs on their previous game. This just goes to show you that anything can happen in conference tournament play.

With the win, Fresno State earns an automatic bid into the granddaddy of women’s college basketball the NCAA Women’s tournament.  It will be interesting to see how far the Bulldogs can go in the tournament. After a conference tournament title they certainly have momentum on their side and have the potential to put other teams on notice and let everyone in the nation know exactly what the Mountain West conference is all about. Now is of interest to note that San Diego State could get an at large bit into the NCAA women’s tournament as they did have a very impressive regular and conference season record. The Mountain West conference tournament did go according to plan this year as the top seeds won as expected. There were no big upsets and no underdogs made a run at it this year.

The Boise State women’s basketball team were eliminated in the first round by the eventual winner of the conference tournament the Fresno State Bulldogs. They lost in a big way 72-55. The opening round lost was a disappointing loss for the Broncos as they were hoping to end their string of bad luck with a run through the tournament. But it was not meant to be for the Broncos and it capped off what was a disappointing season for Boise State. The women finished the season with a dismal 11-19 overall record and a 4-13 conference record. The Broncos finished 7th in the conference this season. This was certainly not the season the women had hoped for this season. The women struggled throughout the season particularly in conference play. The Broncos will look to retool for next season and hope that they will have a much better season next year. Who knows if the women make improvements for next season this could be them going to the NCAA Tournament.
