Boise State took part in the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships on March 14-16, at the Cadet Natatorium located on the campus of the U.S. Air Force Academy. Lexi Pfeiffer and Ciera Cortney were the qualifying representatives for the Broncos to take part in the championship meets.
Cortney made her way to the championships by achieving qualifying scores in all three of the respected swimming disciplines this season at the MWC championships.
Pfeiffer achieved qualifying scores on one-meter and three meter, as well as finishing 13th on platform at the MWC championships.
Cortney, a junior, put herself in the Broncos record-books, becoming the first swimmer in Boise State history to make it to three zone championships. Pfeiffer, a senior, made her career debut –appearance at the meet. Both Pfeiffer and Cortney competed in all three events; One-Meter, Three-Meter and Platform.
Both student-athletes competed in a bracket of 50 women for the springboard competition and 30 women for the platform competition.
During the one-meter diving event, each swimmer had the task of attempting six-dives. Each dive allowed the swimmers to earn points. After the sixth and final dive the scores of each dive were tallied up to determine a winner.
Hailey Ishimatsu, from USC, took the one-meter event, earning a final score of 612.25.
Cortney had a respectable finish in the event placing 11th with a final score of 539.90. Pfeiffer finished six-spots back of Cortney, placing 17th with a final score of 518.00
In the women’s three-meter diving event (six dives), Samantha Pickens from the University of Arizona took the top spot with a final score of 708.45.
Cortney and Pfeiffer did not qualify for the final round of the three-meter championships. Cortney finished 33rd with a final score of 246.75 in the Prelim/Quarterfinals. Pfeiffer finished one-spot behind in the qualifying event, placing 34th with a final score of 244.80.
