On Saturday the last no-loss non-BCS school Ohio got beat by rival Miami University of Ohio. Open the door for America’s favorite BCS bowl buster Boise Sate. Can the Broncos bust the BCS again? The Broncos would need to finish at least in the top 16 of the final BCS standings to qualify for a Bowl Championship Series invitation.
Although the Broncos lost to Michigan State, who has since gone 5-4, it was at the beginning of the season and as Bronco fans have learned from the past it’s not if you lose it’s when you lose that matters in the BCS bowl rankings.
Currently, the Broncos are No. 21 and with over a month left in the regular season and Rutger’s getting knocked off the list of unbeaten BCS teams on Saturday helped quite a bit.
According to NBC Sports, below is how the BCS bowl games are chosen.
The champion of Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference, the Sun Belt Conference or the Western Athletic Conference will earn an automatic berth in a BCS bowl game if either:
No. 1: If a non-BCS team is ranked in the top 12 of the final BCS Standings or,
No. 2: If a non-BCS team is ranked in the top 16 of the final BCS Standings and its ranking in the final BCS Standings is higher than that of a champion of a conference that has an annual automatic berth in one of the BCS bowls.
In order to achieve this the Broncos have to continue to take care of business and must dominate the rest of its’ Mountain West opponents and finish the season as 11-1 conference champions. This is harder then it sounds because they still play at Hawaii and at Nevada to end the season. As long as the Broncos continue to win and other teams continue to lose Boise State could end up in
its third BCS bowl game in nine years.
If Boise State can make a run at another BCS bowl, this could be considered one of the best seasons that the Broncos have ever had. Coach Petersen is proving why he is a two time Bear Bryant award winner. The defense has stepped up and made making a major bowl game a possibility when no one thought it was feasible.
