Story

When you hear Women’s Center you may wonder what we do. You may think to yourself, “Didn’t women get equal rights decades ago?” or “Where’s the men’s center?” You may think about radical feminism or rest yourself assured that you would never be interested in such a place. If any of these ideas have crossed your mind.let me share with you a few things you might not know.

The Women’s Center works on many oppressive issues such as sexism, racism, heterosexism, ableism, and other “isms.” You may have also heard of another legendary “ism”-Feminism. Practicing feminism means examining oppressive and unfair practices and advocating for the equality of all people.

Understanding the impact of sexism in our society, we target many of our services to Women; thus, we are called the Women’s Center. We recognize that women are underrepresented in history books, athletics, politics, careers in math and science, and executive positions. Women are the most likely victims of stalking, sexual assault, and relationship violence. These examples of inequalities are symptomatic of “isms” in larger systems-systems in which we advocate for equality of all people.

In recognizing how students are impacted by “isms” we offer many supportive and educational services, including:

- A 24-hour crisis response for women and men who are victims or survivors of sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking.

- Social services and referrals for students experiencing life-changing issues such as divorce, pregnancy, coming out, and financial stress.

- A mentoring program for non-traditional students who are enrolling in Boise State University for the first time or returning after a break in their education.

Beyond offering supportive services, the Women’s Center also presents many events throughout the year, including:

Diversity Day Defined, a Bronco Welcome event focused on understanding ourselves as diverse individuals and respecting the diversity of the people around us.

The Clothesline project, an interactive event to create awareness about relationship violence.

The Bra Project, an auction of artistic representations of bras; proceeds go towards funding breast cancer research and support.

Our annually produced V-DAY play, which raises money for violence awareness programming.

Celebration of the contributions of Idaho women during Women’s History Month and the humanitarian efforts of students and staff at the Larry Selland Humanitarian Award celebration. Sexual Assault Awareness Month Denim Day (wear your jeans!), Walk a Mile, and Take Back the Night, a survivor dedicated rally.

Performances by the S.E.C.K.S. squad, a sex-positive peer theater troupe dedicated to creating awareness about violence, resources, and ways to get involved and end violence.
