New Student and Family Programs is getting ready for another exciting year of working with all new students to make sure they get through their first year successfully.

It is our job to connect new students with the resources they need, especially each other! This is why making connections is the cornerstone of every orientation program coming up this summer. Whether you are straight out of high school, transferring from another college or university, or coming to school after a long time away from academics, at orientation this summer, you will have the chance to meet tons of new people as you adjust to campus life.

Beyond orientation, we will have programs all through the first semester to help traditional students get a grasp on all of the new responsibilities that come along with going to school, to assist transfer students as they adjust to a new campus, and to provide assistance to non-traditional students who may need some advice on balancing work, family, school, and everything in between.

Most first-year students will have a chance to use the First-Year Read book, Run, by Ann Patchett, in one of their courses. All new first-time first-year students will get a copy of the book at orientation. Ann Patchett will be visiting campus Tuesday, November 18th 2009 to give the keynote address of the 09-10 First-Year Read program.

One other major development in the First-Year Read program will be the inaugural book selection process for choosing the First-Year Read book by current Boise State students. For the past four years, the First-Year Read program has grown tremendously, and now that we have four years of students who have participated, it is time we turn the process back over to the student body for the initial nominations for each summer’s new book. Next October will be Book Nomination Month. Current students will be able to submit nominations for the 2010-2011 First-Year Read book. The nominations will be reviewed by university committees made up of students, faculty, and staff, from which a recommendation will be made to President Kustra. We are excited to have each year’s book originate from a student nomination. We’ll keep you posted!

Another event to get on your calendar is our second annual Parent and Family Weekend. This is happening the weekend of Friday, October 30th-Sunday, November 1st. We’ve already started planning the weekend’s events, which includes reserving a section of Bronco Stadium especially or families. This year’s game will be against San Jose State. Check back with us in the fall for more details.

In closing, we want to invite all new students to Boise State University’s Convocation on Friday, August 21st, 2009. Convocation is the formal bookend to Commencement for new students, and serves as the symbolic opening to the new academic year for the campus. We look forward to seeing all new students at the Morrison Center on the 21st at 3pm. Families are invited to attend!

See you all at orientation!
