"Welcome to your first day at senate,” Associated Students of Boise State University Adviser Charlie Varland said.
The 2009-10 student Senate meet for the first time Tuesday, April 28 in the Student Union Forum to begin passing legislation.
Different clubs and organizations speckled the Galley as the Senate went about their work. Among the clubs were the newly recognized Human and Equal Rights Organization, the Cultural Center, the Black Student Alliance and the International
Native Council.
Many of these clubs stood to talk to the Senate about their individual club and group’s goals. Each group talked about working closely with the senators, and stressed the importance of the senators’ participation in events.
“It’s understandable that a lot of people want to welcome and say hi to the new senators,” Senate Pro Temp Justin White said.
One of the important matters of business was the introduction of Senate Bill No.1, which asked for $651.15 from the 2008-09 discretionary. The purpose of this bill was to reserve equipment and pay for promotions of the film “The Devil Came on Horseback.”
The second important matter was electing a senate Pro Tempore. Sens. White, Aaron Henretty and Eliot I all gave speeches explaining why they should be elected. White was elected.
“It’s a big shock, and kind of an honor for me,” White said. “I’ve been wanting to make some differences. I was surprised by
the support.”
If you have suggestions or would like to be more involved with Boise State, come to ASBSU Senate meetings in the Forum at 4 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students may also visit the ASBSU Website at asbsu.boisestate.edu.
