The Associated Students of Boise State University wrapped up one term and opened another with an awards ceremony Monday night.

The event celebrated the accomplishments of last year’s legislative, judiciary and executive staff with a string of awards presented by ASBSU President Trevor Grigg before swearing next year’s staff into office.

Newly elected student leaders solemnly raised their hands and recited the pledge “to uphold and protect the constitutions and laws of the Associated Students of Boise State University, the state of Idaho, and the United States of America.” Afterward many said they were excited for the work ahead.

“I’m sad to see the old Senate go,” Sen. Justin White said. “But it looks like a great group for next year too. We can get a lot done.”

During the ceremony, Grigg spoke at length about his past experience as president and his future goals in office.

“This year in ASBSU, we were a united student government,” he said, and promised to keep ASBSU cohesive in the coming year. He believes cooperation is essential because “right now we face tough times. . When things are tough we can’t just sit back and wait for someone to take care of us. We have to take action.”

Aside from celebrating student government, the ceremony also awarded students for excellence within the university. They acknowledged students’ accomplishments in everything from athletics to academics and community service.

With a long round of applause, the audience honored all the students’ accomplishments – both ASBSU members and not – and celebrated students who improve Boise State.
