Tuesday, April 21, not only gave us sun, heat and sunburns, it gave us the Human Rights Teach-In.
Earlier this year Sen. Nicole LeFavour proposed a Human Rights Amendment to the State Affairs Committee. Seven senators were on the committee. Two senators voted for the amendment while five voted against.
The amendment would have prevented discrimination against sexual orientation in the workplace. A Boise State University student group formed soon after as a response and organized this teach-in.
Celeste DeVore is currently studying for her masters in social work and is a member of the student group running the teach-in. She said the purpose of this teach-in is to “educate BSU students about the Human Rights Act.”
The event took place from noon to 1 p.m. on the Student Union patio.
Speakers included Sen. Les Bock, Sen. LeFavour, Dave Krick, Monica Hopkins, the Executive Director of ACLU-Idaho, a Twin Falls group and other human rights advocates.
Before local comedian Matt Bragg started the event with a comedy act, guitar music played in the background by local folk singer Audra Connelly. There were also performances by the Cherry Bombs, a local dance troupe.
With more than 75 students in attendance, second year social work masters student Tiffany Finateri felt it was a success.
“I think that this location worked out great,” Finateri said. “A lot of students have stopped to educate themselves and get involved.”
Several students thought the event was both educational and extremely beneficial to have on campus, as well as an opportunity for people to show their feelings about the gay and lesbian community.
“I think that it’s really great that they do stuff like this around campus,” communication major Meika Wild said. “I think there should be more and more awareness."
