Coffee. It’s a sin for some, for others it’s a daily necessity. Whatever the case may be for you, that rich aroma of freshly roasted coffee tempts the senses of the best of us. So where can we get the best caffeine fix for the day?

These coffee houses aren’t quite as mainstream as Starbucks and Moxie Java. Instead of focusing on the flavor associated with name brand coffee chains, these places offer more affordable and unique opportunities when fulfilling your morning routine.

The question of opinion still exists – what qualifies as good coffee?

That preference differs from person to person, and this is just an overview of some of the Treasure Valley’s most aromatic hot

beverage hangouts.

First stop, Alia’s Coffee House. Located downtown, Alia’s is a great place for students to do homework or escape from their academic woes. The menu includes freshly made sandwiches, pastries and bagels as well as a huge variety of every type of coffee imaginable, both cold and hot – and always delicious.

A huge sitting area is filled with easy chairs and comfortable tables. Painted tumbleweeds dangle from the ceiling and the people who hang out there are at ease. A small outdoor area is also open to guests, offering an opportunity to relax in the sunshine while enjoying their beverages.

The atmosphere is unique and inviting, especially because the prices are great for college students. Alia’s is a coffee shop where one can purchase a substantial snack for $5 and soak up the day.

If freshly brewed, imported coffee and tasty desserts are more your style, Bippy’s Coffee and Cakes is your destined coffee shop home.

Owner Kathy Canfield makes all of the rich pastries and cakes daily. She also makes a selection of birthday and wedding cakes. The more icing, the better is Bippy’s philosophy.

Customers can enjoy a mocha while listening to live acoustic guitar and playing board games with friends.

The shop only opened a few months ago and needs all the support it can get. Bippy’s offers a 20 percent discount on drinks for all students’ first visit – just show your Boise State ID. They also offer free wifi, which is sure to be a plus for students.

Lucy’s Coffee is within walking distance from campus. Already a student favorite, as the weather improves, many students have been spotted enjoying the sun and drinks in the small patio seating area as well as taking advantage of free wifi.

The coffee shop has a summer vibe to it with good coffee, but the bubble tea cannot be rivaled. The food is fresh and unique, with items on the menu such as quiche and a variety of pastries.

These places are only a few of the lesser-known coffee houses in Boise and the surrounding areas. Be aware that there are lots of unique and enjoyable places in Boise to drink coffee. Remember, there’s more out there than Starbucks.
