The College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs is getting ready for a new class: “Discover Boise.”
The new class will start this summer. The class is meant to better connect the university to the city of Boise. Because Boise State sits right next to downtown Boise, the SSPA wants to take advantage of the city we live in.
According to Chris Blanchard, the chair of SSPA, the first class is a micro view of the city, down to the sidewalks and planning of the structure of the city.
It will look at the history of the city itself, the planning issues and all of the policies involved with Boise.
The second class will be a macro view. It will look at how the city interacts with the region around it. Students will take bus trips to the Boise foothills, to the wine district of Caldwell and to Arrowrock Dam to learn about some of the water issues.
“The class is brand new, and will cover pretty much any area two credit, at the 297, 497 and 597 levels.” Blanchard said. “The college is really excited to offer this course. One of the first things our new dean wanted to do was try to increase the level of engagement between the students, city and community as a whole.”
The classroom will be located downtown at the corner of 8th Street and Idaho Avenue.
