In every sport, the Boise State and University of Idaho rivalry is a heated matchup.
Saturday afternoon the Boise State men’s rugby team won a hard fought battle with Idaho, 24-19.
“We always have a good rivalry,” Boise State’s Dave VanEps said. “We went up there last year and they beat us in a pretty hard-fought game last time and it was a pretty hard fought game today.”
Coming into the final stretch of playing time, the game was tied 19 -19, and if the time ran out the game would have ended in a tie.
With tensions already reaching the breaking point, Boise State was able to push themselves into excellent field position for the winning score.
With mere seconds remaining, BSU’s Pat Prescott was able to lunge into the end zone, winning the game.
“Well second half we kind of ran out of steam a little bit,” Boise State’s Jeff Kuehn said. “We picked it up there at the end and dug down and found that last little burst and we got it in there [final score to win].”
With an excellent first half start that saw the Broncos put up 14 unanswered points, the Vandals were able to take the momentum going into half with a last minute score. This all lead to an extremely tight second half and to the final-second score. This all marked another incredible moment in the Broncos vs. Vandals rivalry.
“The Boise State and U of I rivalry is always a big one and it’s no exception to rugby,” Kuehn said. “It gets pretty heated.”
At the beginning of the game the Broncos came out swinging, putting up their first score quickly by VanEps. Later John Farley added to the board with a quick run to the outside followed by a clutch kick to make the score 14-0. When it looked like a walk-away win, the Vandals came out and made it a nail bitter up until the end.
After such an entertaining game, VanEps urges more athletes to come out for the team.
“If you’ve ever played any sport, and all those guys out there who are just working out to work out come out and play rugby!"
