The Boise State women’s softball team was in need of a win after being swept by Nevada last weekend. They had the chance Tuesday in Caldwell against the College of Idaho Coyotes in a double-header.
The first game turned into a pitcher’s duel as BSU’s Allie Crump and C of I’s Jody Zillner kept both teams scoreless through three innings.
However the Broncos found their bats in the 3rd inning. Kellie Sweeney scored Kellie Caplan on a groundout. Laurel Wyatt added a single for BSU bringing Tazz Weatherly, who reached base on a double, to score giving the Broncos a 2-0 lead.
The Coyotes responded right back with R.B.I.’s from Amy Rhodes and Heather Dixon to tie the game at 2-2.
As quickly as both teams got their bats going, they stopped. Both pitchers held their own, keeping either team from coming close to scoring.
In extra-innings, the Broncos found their offense again in the 8th inning when Jessi Hannah drove through the infield scoring Ashleigh Viers-Gordillo for the go-ahead run.
The Coyotes kept hope alive when second basemen Brittany Wenzel reached base on a single.
A few batters later, Dixon hit a two-strike pitch off Crump up and over the wall for a walk-off homerun giving the Coyotes a 4-3 victory over BSU.
“I thought [Crump] had a great outing. You know we’re working on the mental stuff that we’ve been working on all year,” head coach Erin Thorpe said.
“She just missed an 0-2 pitch . the rest of the game she did a great job.”
The loss was the Broncos’ fourth straight as College of Idaho shocked the Broncos.
“It’s always disappointing to give up a homerun ball on a two strike count,” Thorpe said.
Thorpe wasn’t about to let the defeat keep her team from playing hard in the second game though.
Coach Thorpe talked about how her team now needed to focus on having good at-bats and going out there playing a solid defense.
“They’ve got to play their best game every time they step out on that field,” Thorpe said.
The Broncos did just that in the second game.
Little time was wasted before the Broncos had scored more runs in the 1st inning then the entire game prior leading 3-0. Aubray Zell started for BSU, throwing a complete game striking out seven while giving up two unearned runs.
They added two more runs in the 2nd inning, but in the fourth, they swung the door wide open. After crossing one run, Kathy Cox hit a three-run homer giving the Broncos an 8-0 lead. For Cox it was her seventh homerun of the season.
The Coyotes added two runs themselves from errors avoiding the mercy rule but it was no matter as BSU continued on to win big 12-2.
The win could not have come any sooner for BSU ending their losing skid. Now BSU heads to New Mexico to face the Aggies (30-6, 5-3) in an important three game series this weekend and looking to keep their winning ways.
