The Boise State football team will wrap up its spring season with the annual Blue and Orange game at Bronco Stadium Friday night. The scrimmage will be the team’s third and final of the spring practice session.

The scrimmage is an annual event and a chance for Bronco fans to get a first glimpse of the team they will support next fall. A new format of how the teams have been assigned has been implemented.

The coaching staff decided to do more of a draft pick to assign players to each team, either blue or white. In the past, the players have been assigned with a scoring system, placing the offense against the defense.

“It was interesting to see the two teams put together,” head coach Chris Petersen said. “There were definitely different strategies. It was probably 99 percent draft until one team drafted all the kickers, which I thought was a brilliant move. “

The blue team seems to hold the familiar names to the Bronco fans. Senior Kyle Wilson, juniors Titus Young, Jeremy Avery and D.J. Harper and sophomore Kellen Moore have been chosen to represent the offensively strong team. On the white side, junior Michael Coughlin will be playing Moore’s counterpart as a quarterback.

“We’ve always kind of wanted to do [a game] this way,” Petersen said. “But usually our numbers are so down. This is kind of the first year we’ve gone ‘You know, this might be the year to take that shot.’”

A twist to the scrimmage is Petersen’s plan to have someone fake an injury, testing the abilities of the replacements.

“Some guys are going to get dinged,” Petersen said, “and I didn’t tell them who it is. The better someone looks, the faster they’re going down.”

The rules of the scrimmage differ from a regular football game. The teams will play eight- minute quarters, and the ball will be punted to begin, but there won’t be a punt-return team on the field. Wherever the ball is caught or stops’ rolling is where the first down will begin.

There will still be regular football scoring, and field goals will likely be a factor.

Normally, assistant coaches Brent Pease (white) and Pete Kwiatkowski (blue) will be taking Petersen’s position of head coach for each team.

The remaining assistant coaches split up as well. Petersen will be watching from the side and talking a bit on the radio.

Of course, there’s an incentive to win the wrap-up scrimmage as well.

“The prize is the winners will eat, we’ll have food for those guys,” Petersen said. “The losers are not eating, and they’re not even going to take showers.”

Although this scrimmage is seemingly just fun and games, fans truly will get a glimpse of what to expect this coming fall season. Admission to the stadium is $7 and the game begins at 6:30 p.m.

Get there early to watch the players enter the field for stretches and decide your pick for the winner.
