Ryan Winterswyk Named to 2009 Lott Trophy Watch List

Junior Ryan Winterswyk was named to the 2009 Lott Trophy Watch List. The trophy is awarded to college football’s Defensive Impact Player of the Year.

Winterswyk earned first-team All-WAC honors last season after finishing with 40 tackles and 4.5 sacks for minus-33 yards.

He led the team with 11.5 tackles for a loss for 48 yards and recorded six pass breakups and two forced fumbles. In addition, the defensive end was named to Phil Steele Publications’ All-WAC second team and was named Boise State’s co-Most Valuable Defensive Player with safety Ellis Powers.

The Lott Trophy is awarded to college football’s Defensive Impact Player of the Year. The Lott Trophy is the only college football award to equally recognize athletic performance and personal character attributes of players.

The winner will be announced at a gala black-tie banquet at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach, Calif. Dec. 13.

Broncos cruise to wins against Nevada and New Mexico State

The No.19 Boise State men’s tennis team completed its regular season road schedule with a bang, sweeping a pair of Western Athletic Conference foes Saturday in Reno, Nev.

The Broncos improved to 18-7 on the season after a 6-1 win against No.73 New Mexico State and a 5-2 win against host team, No.67 Nevada.

The Broncos started out their first match against New Mexico State, winning the No.1 and No.3 doubles matches to clinch the crucial doubles point.

No.50 Kean Feeder and James Meredith took down NMSU’s Eduardo Salas and Roman Stoisavljevic, 8-4 in the No.1 match. In the No.3 match, Blane Shields and Matt Solomon teammed for a tough 9-8 (8) win against Gustav Diep and Stefan McKinney. NMSU’s Jim Brouleau and Arthur Surreaux beat BSU’s Stanley Sarapanich and Clancy Shields 8-6 in the No.2 match.

In singles play, No.26 Clancy Shields earned a 6-3, 6-2 win against Diep in the No.2 match. No.70 Feeder was close behind with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Brouleau in the No.1 match while No.71 Meredith downed Surreauz, 7-6, 7-6 in the No.3 match. Cristian Hodel picked up another point for the Broncos at the No.4 spot after downing Matej Stakne, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.

Blane Shields picked up the final point for Boise State when he defeated Salas, 7-6, 10-4 in the No.6 match. NMSU’s McKinney was able to earn the Aggies one team point after defeating Sarapanich, 6-2, 7-5 in the No.5 singles match.

In their second match, the Broncos won the No.1 and No.3 spots in doubles. No.50 Feeder and Meredith defeated Alex Darety and Weissem Derbel, 8-5 in the No.1 match.

In the singles play, Meredith downed Darety, 6-3, 6-4 in the No.3 spot. Nevada’s Myard brought the team standings to a 2-1 Bronco lead after downing Hodel 7-5, 6-4 in the No.4 match. No.26 Clancy Shields earned a 6-4, 6-4 win against Derbel.

Feeder clinched the team title with a 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 win against Garcin in the No.1 match. Sarapanich defeated Benjamin David, 6-4, 6-2 in the No.5 match while Blane Shields was defeated by Kanzelmeyer, 6-1, 6-4 in the No.6 match.

The Broncos will return home to host a slew of WAC teams in their final regular season matches April 17-18.
