Broncos snap five game skid, split twinbill with Spartans
The Boise State softball team snapped its losing streak Saturday with a doubleheader split at San Jose State. The Broncos (18-14, 4-4) took the early game 4-2 to end their five-game skid before losing 8-0 in the nightcap. The Spartans (16-24, 4-5) took the season series 2-1 with their win.
The Broncos offense came out firing in the first game and so did Aubray Zell in the circle in the first game. In the top of the first, the Broncos put up two quick runs to take the early lead. Laeha Hill started the game with a single into center and was followed by a Lexi Straton walk. Kathy Cox had an RBI-doubles. The Spartans responded with a two-run homer in the bottom half by Kelli Fangonilo to tie the score at 2-2.
That was all the Spartans could plate in the game as Zell never allowed a Spartan runner past second base for the rest of the game. Zell broke out of a slump with a complete game win, earning her team-leading 10th win on the season. The freshman pitcher allowed only two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five. She responded to the home run by retiring the next nine batters.
The go-ahead came in the third inning for the Broncos. Lexi Straton scored on an error to give the Broncos a 3-2 lead. They put up an insurance run in the sixth as well. Christina Capobianco led off the inning with a single. Three batters later, Kellie Caplan hit a double down the left field line to score Tazz Weatherly, pinch running for Capobianco, giving the Broncos a 4-2 lead and the win.
After snapping the losing streak, the Broncos’ bats fell silent as Spartan starter Amanda Pridemore allowed only two hits in the shutout. The Spartan offense put up four runs in the second and three in the fourth for the victory.
Cox and Straton picked up the only two Bronco hits as Allie Crump struggled in the circle. She allowed five runs in the first inning. Mandy Klein came in to relieve Crump in the second, although Crump was credited with all four runs. Klein gave up the three runs in the fourth, allowing six hits and striking out three in three innings of work.
The Broncos return home next weekend for a three-game series with Nevada. The Wolf Pack and Broncos will face off Friday at 3 p.m. and hit the diamond for a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
Boise State Maneline Dancers top at Nationals
The Boise State Harvey Neef Maneline Dancers took first place in the hip hop division at the USA National Collegiate Cheer and Dance Competition in Anaheim, Calif. last weekend. At the same competition, the Boise State Cheerleaders placed third nationally.
The Maneline Dancers’ hip hop routine was choreographed by Ajhlia Hall. Boise State faced the University of Oregon, California State University Fullerton, San Diego State University and Idaho State University in the finals. They entered the final round with the highest composite score, the equivalent of the first seed in a tournament. The team has only competed in the hip hop division for the past three years. Last year they advanced to the final round for the first time and ultimately placed fourth in the nation. The team is coached by Julie Stevens with the assistance of Tara Batiato.
