BSU, Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier and head coach Mike Maynard named in gender discrimination lawsuit

Story

"Maynard has [.] treated me as his personal servant. He has required me [.] to act as his secretary and perform tasks that are stereotypically done by females.”

This complaint is one of many found in court documents filed by former Boise State University assistant track and field coach Amy Christoffersen.

On Sept. 25, 2008, Christofferson sued the university, head track and field coach Mike Maynard and Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier for gender discrimination.

According to the suit, Boise State athletics discriminated against Christofferson in the form of unequal salaries and pay.

In 1963, the Equal Pay Act set the requirement that men and women receive equal pay for equal work. The suit claims that in a majority of the nine years Christoffersen was an assistant coach she did not receive equal pay.

According to Intercollegiate Athletics Compensation Reports for the years 2002-08, Christofferson received less compensation during some fiscal years than her male

co-workers.

From 2002-07, Christoffersen was the only female assistant track and field coach. The above-named report confirms that in her tenure as an assistant coach, Christofferson was paid differently than a male coach who came into the program with less experience. This document lists the experience level of all of the assistant coaches when they began their positions, as well as their starting wage.

Christofferson’s suit also asserts that during her time as an assistant, she preformed duties that were not included in the original job description of a BSU assistant track and field coach.

In a recent job description, posted at jobs.berecruited.com/jobs/assistant-coach-track-field, an assistant track and field coach at Boise State has the following responsibilities: “Recruiting as assigned, monitoring student-athletes academic progress, assisting with the daily operations of the Track & Field/ Cross Country teams, demonstrated ability to coach and recruit student athletes, additional duties as assigned by the head coach.”

According to court documents, Christofferson’s additional duties included the arrangement of the team’s transportation, making hotel accommodations, managing all meal money, taking care of all entry fee payments, managing all expenses and reconciling all costs at the end of trips.

In her suit, Christofferson alleges she was assigned these duties because she is a female, and that male assistant coaches had no additional administrative duties outside their job descriptions.

The Civil Rights Act, Title XII, passed in 1964, prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

Amy Christofferson and Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier were contacted regarding this matter. Christofferson was unable to comment on the advice of counsel; Bleymaier’s office also opted not to comment on the suit.
