The Boise State women’s softball team had a rough homecoming this weekend, losing a double-header to Western Athletic Conference rival Louisiana Tech Saturday. The losses bring the overall season record for the Broncos to 17-13 and 3-2 in WAC play.
The story of the games had to be the pitching from Louisiana Tech. The Lady Techsters came into this weekend’s matchup ranked third in the WAC for pitching, allowing only 2.73 ERA per game as a team. Meghan Krieg is ranked first and teammate Krissi Oliver eighth in WAC standings for individual pitching.
In game one of the double-header Oliver allowed only five hits and no runs while adding three strikeouts to her season total.
Christina Capobianco, the power of the Broncos offense, was only able to muster a single base hit from three at bats against Oliver.
Capobianco was not the only part of the powerful Boise State offense that struggled against La Tech. Laeha Hill, Lexi Straton and Ashleigh Viers-Gordillo combined for only two base hits from 10 at bats.
In the bottom of the sixth inning of game one, the Broncos almost managed to mount a comeback after loading the bases for Laurel Wyatt. The excitement was short lived however, as Wyatt grounded out to end the inning. The defense of La Tech proved too much for Boise State to handle as they were shut out in their first game 3-0.
It was not all bad news for the Broncos in game one. Allie Crump pitched a very nice game with six strikeouts and only two walks. The third inning is the only place she struggled, allowing three runs to score.
Game two of the double-header started much the same way as the first for both teams. The pitching from La Tech proved a little slow to find its mark, but never-the-less, Boise State never found its offensive power. The ace for La Tech, Krieg, managed six strikeouts, three hits and two runs in seven innings.
She did however, walk five Broncos, three of which came against Ashleigh Viers-Gordillo.
On the Bronco side of the plate, Boise State was poised to strike back at an early deficit to the Techsters in the bottom of the third inning after two walks and a couple of base hits loaded the bases for Straton.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Krieg managed to get out of the Broncos’ threat with a strikeout against Straton.
Aside from a late homerun by Kathy Cox, the Broncos never got ahead of the Techsters and fell 7-2 in game two of the double-header. Pitching seemed to struggle more in game two with Aubray Zell and Mandy Klein allowed seven runs and 13 hits on the afternoon.
The back-to-back losses for Boise State brought their in-conference record to 3-2 following their sweep of Utah on the road last week.
The Broncos will try to regain some of their offensive power and find a defensive groove as WAC play begins to heat up with the weather.
