Notebook, pencil, ideas? Check! The President’s Writing Award is pleased to announce the 25th anniversary celebration of recognizing student writing.

“The ultimate goal of the contest has been to encourage students from all disciplines to participate,” Carrie Seymour, coordinator of the contest, said.

This year’s categories include: personal essay, critical analysis or research-based writing in science, engineering and math and those are just to name a few. Students can still participate in this year’s celebration. No student wants to pass up a good essay that might win $150 for first place winning and $75 for second place.

The President’s Writing Awards has been, “Open to all undergraduate students, and submission numbers keep growing each year,” Seymour said. It is a great way to get students thinking on a particular subject and see what they are capable of.

Each category requires different submission guidelines, for example, first year writing requires students to be enrolled in English 90, 101 or 102 or if enrolled in fall 2008, students may still submit an essay.

The committee works hard each year to organize the submissions of the essays, the judging and the ceremony for the winners. The committee is made up of Seymour’s colleague, Melissa Keith, and administrative help from DeAnna Jones and Tracy Hopkins.

Professors have an in on the contest as well.

“This year, Dr. Henry Charlier in the chemistry department is heading up the science, engineering and math category,” Seymour said. “Many other faculty members across campus have volunteered their time to help judge the essays and have encouraged their students to submit.”

In the past there has not been a publication of winning essays.

“We are compiling an anthology that will include winning essays from this year and from past years,” Seymour said.

Winners will be announced the first week of April.

“It is a lovely ceremony with many students, their families and friends and faculty in attendance,” Seymour said.

The 2009 contest deadline is March 13 at 5 p.m. Checkout boisestate.edu/president/writingawards for more information.

“As Dr. Kustra has said in his closing comments at past ceremonies – it takes courage and commitment to be a writer and especially one who is willing to have their work judged against the best writing of their peers,” Seymour said.
