Talking Broncos nap top sweepstakes

The Boise State University speech and debate team claimed overall sweepstakes top honors at the Earl Wells Memorial Speakeasy Invitational hosted by Oregon State University Feb. 14-15.

Their first place finish at the Corvallis, Ore., meet was determined by a tabulation of both individual event and debate performances throughout the weekend.

The Talking Broncos competed against 16 schools, including, George Fox University, the University of Portland, the College of Southern Idaho and host Oregon State.

Regan Charlton (junior, Inkom) had a strong showing in individual events that earned her the top spot in the pentathlon competition, a recognition granted to students who compete in and finish well in multiple individual events. She took home first place in both informative and communication analysis speaking. She also won second place in program oral interpretation and fourth place in extemporaneous speaking.

Ben Larsen (sophomore, Raft River) placed second in dramatic interpretation, third in program oral interpretation, and third in prose interpretation, while Kate Henry (junior, Coeur d’Alene) placed second in duo interpretation with partner Erik Sande (senior, Boise), fourth in after dinner speaking and fifth in dramatic interpretation.

Ben Bishop (senior, Meridian) placed fourth in impromptu speaking, fourth in persuasion, fourth in communication analysis, and sixth in after dinner speaking. He was also the tenth place speaker in international public debate. In addition to his second-place finish in duo interpretation with Henry, Sande placed second in impromptu sales and third in communication analysis.

Aaron Olson (sophomore, Bremerton, Wash.) placed fifth in persuasion and reached the quarterfinals of international public debate and Paul Wardwell (senior, Boise) placed third in both informative and after dinner speaking.

In only his second tournament, George Fenton (freshman, Post Falls) took second place in informative speaking, third in extemporaneous speaking, and sixth in persuasion. He also reached the finals of novice international public debate and was named the second-place overall speaker in novice debate.

In only her second tournament, Dawn Gillin (senior, Lewiston) was named the top overall speaker in novice international public debate, while Reggie Holmquist (junior, Kuna) reached the finals of impromptu speaking and the quarterfinals of novice international public debate and Randi Robinson (senior, Boise) was named top novice in prose interpretation.
