Senators clad in suits and ties opened the Associated Students of Boise State University Senate meeting Thursday, Feb. 19, with a signing ceremony.
ASBSU President Trevor Grigg formally signed Senate Resolution No. 9 into action – and made a statement by appearing at the meeting.
The president typically does not attend Senate meetings.
Resolution No. 9 emphasizes the responsibilities of the student government and reiterates the importance of using all
its powers.
The resolution comes after conflict between ASBSU and Boise State administration about Senate projects, such as the organization’s Website and the legality of closed fee hearings.
After the signing, Grigg spoke briefly.
“We want to work with the administration on campus,” Grigg said. “We seek to understand and seek to be understood [.] We have to take responsibility.”
Grigg also encouraged the senators to keep working with the ASBSU judicial and
executive branches.
“We’re starting to get things done – starting to have the same vision,” he said.
Later in the meeting, Sen. Joel Henretty reiterated Grigg’s message.
“We don’t want to pick a fight with the administration,” he said. “We don’t want to call it a war. We want to understand them. We want to go on fact-finding missions. We seek to learn.”
Henretty cited past miscommunication between the student government and the administration as causing mutual misunderstandings. He said he hopes the two organizations will work together in the future.
