Boise State’s scoring woes surfaced again Sunday afternoon as Fresno State pulled away in the second half for a big 12-point, 70-58, road victory against the Broncos in Taco Bell Arena. After rallying from seven-points down early in the second half to tie the game, the Broncos went cold from the floor hitting only six field goals in the final 15 minutes of play. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs slowly pulled away, outscoring Boise State 27-15 during that time span. In the end, Fresno State won the battle for possession of first place in the league standings with the victory as they improve to 9-3 in WAC play while the Broncos fell to 7-4.

The first half saw Boise State open solidly, taking a nine-point lead twice midway through the half, the last came with 6:09 to play and the score reading 29-20. Unfortunately, that is when the shooting problems began for the Broncos as the Bulldogs rolled off an 18-4 run to close the half ahead by five points at 38-33.

The second half started with Boise State rallying from an early seven-point deficit with a 10-3 run to tie the game at 43 with 15 minutes to play. Jamia Malone, who finished the game with a career-tying 19 points, hit her fifth and final 3-pointer from the right corner to tie the score.

With momentum on their side, the Broncos suddenly hit a wall and had trouble scoring in the final 15 minutes of play as Fresno State slowly pulled away.

The Bulldogs responded with a 12-2 run to claim a 55-45 advantage with less than 12 minutes to play. They took a game-high 15-point lead, 68-53, with a little more than three minutes left.

The closest Boise State would get in the final 12 minutes was eight points, 55-47, with 10:26 remaining in the contest. Down 15, 70-55, Boise State’s Brittany Moore hit a last second 3-pointer to make the final Fresno State victory margin 12 points at 70-58.

Malone led three Broncos in double-figure scoring with 19 points to go with three boards, two assists and four steals. She was followed by Janie Bos with 10 points, eight rebounds, and two assists, while Heather Pilcher added 10 points, three boards, two assists and one steal.

Fresno State was led by sophomore Jaleesa Ross with 24 points and six rebounds, followed by Joh-Teena Filipe’s double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds. Ashley walker recorded 10 points.

The loss snapped Boise State’s 15-game home win streak versus conference opponents as the Broncos move to 14-11 overall and 7-4 in league play, dropping into a three-way tie for third place with Louisiana Tech and Nevada. Fresno State maintains the WAC lead improving to 9-3 in league and 18-7 overall.

The Broncos continue their four-game homestand next weekend when they host Utah State Friday, followed by Nevada Sunday. Friday is “Pack the House” night. Children gain free admission with each paying adult.
