


Broncos Hold Off Oklahoma for 4-3 Win in First Day of Great Northwest Shootout
In a marathon of a tennis match, the No. 30-ranked Boise State men’s tennis team took on the No. 71-ranked University of Oklahoma in their first match of the Great Northwest Shootout hosted by the University of Washington on Saturday.
The Broncos (4-3) were able to hold off the Sooners (2-2) and earn a 4-3 win at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Oklahoma was able to earn the first win of the day by picking up the No. 1 doubles match with Sergey Avdeyev and Ionut Beleleu defeating Kean Feeder and James Meredith, 8-4.
However, the Broncos earned the crucial doubles point by winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Clancy Shields and Stanley Sarapanich were able to even up the doubles matches with an 8-6 win over Andrei Daescu and Blake Boswell in the No. 2 spot, leaving the No. 3 doubles match as the decider for the doubles point. The Bronco duo Blane Shields and Freddy Walsh came through for their team, clinching the doubles point with a 9-7 victory over David Pultr and George Chanturia in the No. 3 doubles match.
In singles play, No. 22-ranked Clancy Shields was able to put the Broncos up 2-0 in the team standings after making quick work of No. 44-ranked Daescu, 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match.
Bronco Softball Picks up First Victory Saturday, second win Sunday
The Boise State Softball team picked up it first ever victory on Saturday night with an 8-4 win over Fordham.
After a seesaw game through the first four innings, the Broncos took a commanding 8-3 lead into the seventh.
Aubray Zell picked up the complete game win. Kathy Cox hit a two run homer with Christina Capobianco and Ashleigh Viers-Gordillo picking up some big RBI.
Boise State’s game scheduled game with Cal was canceled Saturday due to weather conditions in southern California.
Sunday afternoon the Broncos picked up their second win of the season with 13-12 win over Wisconsin.
Broncos Open Spring Season at Fifth Annual Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational in St. George, Utah
Boise State opens its 2009 spring schedule today and Tuesday, Feb. 9-10, at the fifth annual Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational in St. George, Utah. The Broncos are one of 14 teams competing in the 36-hole tournament, which will feature one 18-hole round on each day.
Competing for the Broncos at the first spring tournament with be freshman Blake Brown (72.7 avg.) at the number one spot followed by senior Scott Loewen (72.6 avg.) at the two, junior John Baranco (74.8 avg.) will play the three, junior Robbie Richards (74.8 avg.) at the fourth position, while redshirt-sophomore Chris Byrne gets the nod at the fifth spot.
The first four have been main stays in the Bronco lineup this year competing in all five fall competitions while Byrne gets his first action of the 2008-09 season.
The 36-hole tournament is being hosted by Southern Utah University and will feature 14 collegiate teams with over 70 student-athletes participating in the tournament.
The tournament format rules calls for two rounds of 18 holes each. The first round will be played today with the final round contested on Tuesday.
