January 20, 2009 was a historic day with the swearing in of the first African-American president of the United States. The concern we have is that, in general, the media has already hailed Mr. Obama as the next JFK and FDR before serving one day in office. In these perilous and uncertain economic times it is important for us to support our leaders, but at the same time, hold them accountable for their actions and decisions.
It is our sincere “hope” that Mr. Obama can bring the “change” necessary to lift our nation out of these tumultuous times. His inaugural speech was good, but it certainly did not carry the weight of some of his predecessor’s such as Ronald Reagan, John Kennedy, and Franklin Roosevelt. Too much is being put into this historic event.
George W. Bush’s second inauguration cost 45 million dollars. Back then the media criticized that as extreme waste. 170 million dollars was spent on Barack Obama’s inauguration during a recession to which we do not yet know the extent; and this same media hails it as spectacular. It is time to move on from the pageantry and hold our new president accountable for the substance behind his statements. Our prayers go out to our new president and we wish him and our country the best.
