Boise State University and the University of Idaho have teamed up to offer sustainable, green building education to students in the spring 2009 semester. The class, called Introduction to Green Building, is a 30-hour course presented by Green Building Experienced Professionals on weekends throughout the semester.

Classes will be held at the Boise State Micron Engineering Center, Room 114, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. this Saturday, Jan. 24, and continue throughout the semester on Feb. 14, March 7 and April 11.

According to the Center for Professional Development, attendees will gain an in-depth understanding of the ways in which high performance building practices incorporate social, economic and environmental issues into the planning, design and construction of commercial and residential buildings. Course topics include environmental effects, standards specs and codes, and discussions on Green Building rating systems.

After completing the workshops, students will comprehend important aspects of energy and water efficiency, indoor air quality and the incorporation of “green” materials. Professionals moving into fields that require an understanding of sustainable design and environmental health and safety are recommended to attend the course.

Rebecca Mirsky, department chair of the Construction Management Department at Boise State University, is one of the three Green Building experience professionals presenting at this workshop. Mirsky is an environmental engineer in the construction industry with over 20 years experience and specializes in sustainable land use and planning.

Sherry McKibben and Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg from the University of Idaho will also present on green architecture design issues and discuss high performance building projects in the community.
