Softball announces dates to second annual softball camps
The Boise State softball team would like to invite all area softball players to its second annual youth and high school softball camps. The youth camp will be held Jan. 31 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the Caven-Williams Indoor Sports Complex. The high school camp will also take place in the Caven-Williams Indoor Sports Complex Feb. 14 –16.
Campers will receive instruction from members of the inaugural Boise State softball team as well as the Broncos’ coaching staff. The camps will stress the fundamentals of softball while helping each girl take her game to the next level.
Registration for the youth camp is $75 in advance or $85 at the door. The high school camp is $200 in advance or $230 at the door. To register, visit broncosports.com or call 426-4899.
Track and field team ranked No.22.
The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its Division I Preseason Indoor Rankings Jan. 7 and the Boise State men’s track and field team was voted in at No. 22. The University of Oregon earned the top spot in the
men’s poll.
“I think it’s a good measure of the program’s success,” Boise State Head Coach Mike Maynard said. “If you can start off in the right spot, I think it says something about the way you’re perceived from year-to-year. You can’t be a flash in the pan to start out there.”
The Broncos return to the track Jan. 24 when they will host the Blue and Orange Invitational in Nampa. BSU has four indoor meets remaining before hosting the WAC Indoor Championships, Feb. 26-28.
Broncos drop close meet in Hawaii
Only one month after the Broncos finished a half-point behind the Rainbow Wahine at the Husky Invite, the Boise State swim team dropped a dual meet against Hawai’i, 161.5 – 137.5, Jan. 11 in Honolulu.
Despite the loss, the Broncos put up a fight by winning eight of the 16 events, including both relays, and setting three new team records.
“Coming away from this meet with wins in eight events is great for us,” head coach Kristin Hill said. “We had a lot of standouts today and I’m very proud of our team.”
Both the 200 free relay and 200 medley relay shined for Boise State as both relays brought in a first-place finish and set new team records.
The day began with the 200 medley relay swam by Morgan McLain, Emily Irvin, Amber Boucher and Stephanie North. The quartet recorded a time of 1:47.44 for the victory.
“We expected to win the 200 medley relay, but winning the 200 free relay was a big accomplishment and it says a lot about the character of our team,” Hill said. “Both teams have been putting in a lot of hard work, so the wins were well-deserved no matter who touched the wall first.”
The Boise State swim team will head north to Moscow and Pullman, Wash. Jan. 24 – 25 for a pair of dual meets with Idaho and Washington State.
