The excitement is greater than ever with the men’s basketball team off to its greatest start in years. More than once this season, the game winning shot in a Bronco basketball game has come during the last minute.
Crowd attendance has significantly increased each game, which is irrefutably due to such dramatic endings. But is there enough support? What would it take other than heart stopping finishes to bring out legions of fans to a game that’s not played on the blue turf?
That said, a slowly increasing following does exist. It’s not football-strong in terms of size, but the excitement in the stands is almost as ravenous. Associated Students of Boise State University Vice President Joe Bunt is one of the infected fans seen on any given game night.
“It’s a fun, free way to get involved on campus,” Bunt said. “It’s also a great place to meet new people.”
Leading the cheering and fueling the arena is the BSU student section. Located near half court and front row, this group of fans is the epitome of crowd support and
student involvement.
Some even go so far as to dress in identical orange scrubs, referring to themselves as the “Orange Outbreak” and calling for all students to join the epidemic.
The idea of Orange Outbreak originated with ASBSU Lobbyist Dustin Moyer, and these fans are now challenging all students to attend the games.
“We need students to step up and become a factor in Bronco basketball,” Moyer said. “The best part of being so close to the court is being involved in the game and making it hard for visiting teams to come out victorious at Taco Bell Arena.”
With a facility that holds more than 12,000 people, Taco Bell Arena can be that type of place. In 1993 an attendance record was set by selling out all 12,649 seats. In the 16 years since, only President-elect Barack Obama has drawn such seat-busting crowds.
Given the amazing season this team is having, there’s no reason for there not to be record setting support in the stands. With six home games left in the 2008-09 season, even the players are asking for continued support.
“The student section and crowd plays a huge role down the stretch when we are in tight games,” forward Sean Imadivi said. “Hearing the crowd brings the team and me an extra boost of energy and motivation. I want to thank all the students and fans who come to the games and I hope to see everyone at all the remaining games to give us support and bring us energy.”
As a rising university, Boise State’s academics and athletics expand beyond the blue. Support in all aspects is a necessity. While football is the biggest money winner on campus, that doesn’t mean the other sports should go unnoticed. Get out and go to a game this spring while the seats are hot and the teams are rolling!
