San Diego Calif.-What Boise State anticipated and prepared for the most against Texas Christian University turned out to be arguable the wrong thing. All week long BSU prepped for facing the No.1 defense in the nation, but it was TCU’s offensive running game that stung them in the end.
“They’re a physical team. They get those third and shorts.they just do a nice job at that,” head coach Chris Petersen said.
“Coming in we knew it was going to be a defensive battle,” BSU safety Jeron Johnson said. “We didn’t get the stops we needed.”
TCU ran the ball 51 times for 275 yards. They were led by Aaron Brown’s 102 yards and one touchdown performance.
To start the game BSU came out in the first quarter firing. They scored 10 points in the first period off a Kyle Brotzman field goal and later senior Ian Johnson ran the ball in for a 20-yard touchdown. With that score Johnson became the all time leading scorer in Western Athletic Conference play with 58 touchdowns.
However, in the second quarter, TCU’s hailed defense came out and held the Broncos to only a field goal. While the Horned Frogs offense was able to put together a scoring drive with 1:12 left that was capitalized by four straight completions from quarterback Andy Dalton.
“We were executing in the first half,” Dalton said. We knew we could overcome those(turnovers). We were down 13-7 at halftime and we were still in the game. We just had to keep doing what we were doing in the first half.”
The second half of play was almost a complete stand still for the Broncos offense as TCU held them to only one field goal and really disrupted their red zone attack.
“I thought it was our best effort, not our best performance, we had chances,” Petersen said. [They] held us to field goals, that was really the difference right there.”
In the fourth quarter TCU was able to control the ball for almost seven minutes, a span in which they ran 10 plays for 80-yards, which ended in a Joseph Turner 17-yard touchdown run.
“I think they had some good plays,” freshman quarterback Kellen Moore said. “I think at the end of the day they just made good plays.”
With that score, TCU led 17-13, which was the first time the Broncos have found themselves losing in the second half, let alone the fourth quarter.
BSU got the ball back, but once again, the Horned Frogs defense stopped their drive and BSU had to settle for a field goal to make it 16-17 in favor of TCU.
“You got to earn it against TCU, they did a great job, a lot of credit to those guys,” Petersen said. “I knew a couple of those field goals we’re going to come back to haunt us.”
With 1:53 seconds left in the game, BSU was presented with an opportunity to win the game as TU was forced to punt. But on the first play of the drive Moore intended pass was picked off by TCU’s MVP of the game Stephen Hodge.
“My brother was talking to me all week long that this could be my biggest game. It was my first interception of my career,” Hodge said.
However, even though this is BSU’s four bowl loss in five season, they all said that this lose is going to help them get better in the end.
“It’s motivation,” Johnson said. “Last season prepared us for this season. [We'll] come out in the off season and work harder."
