For a majority of the Boise State football team, playing in the 2008 Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego, Calif. will have a little bit more of an impact than any other bowl game.
Currently about one-third of the team is from California and the Dec. 23 matchup game against Texas Christian University will almost resemble a home game for some of the players.
“I’m just so excited for this opportunity to go back home,” senior wide receiver Vinny Perretta, from San Diego Calif said. “It’s like a homecoming for me, my last college game. San Diego there will a lot of people there. It’s going to be an honor to get to play in the same stadium that my dad played in when he was with the Chargers. And then my brother as well played in that stadium for a championship game in high school. I’m definitely looking forward to it.”
Perretta said even before it was announced that Boise State would play in the Poinsettia Bowl, his mom had already bought 70 tickets.
“I’m sure they’ll probably be close to 100[people there],” Perretta said.
Below are just some of the Broncos that are from California.
Ian Johnson
Running Back
Senior
San Dimas, CA
Ian Johnson tied the Western Athletic Conference record of 57 career touchdowns, passing Ledanian Tomlinson (55) and reaching the shared record holder Marshall Faulk. The game at Qualcomm Stadium is a sort of irony. Tomlinson plays for the San Diego Chargers and Faulk broke the record while attending San Diego State University. Could he bring the record home, literally?
Vinny Perretta
Wide Receiver
Senior
Encinitas, Calif.
Perretta will bring a crowd to Qualcomm Stadium where his father, Ralph Perretta, once played during his career in the NFL. Perretta had 34 receptions for two touchdowns and threw for one touchdown to Jeremy Childs. His mother reportedly purchase 70 tickets to ensure there would be plenty of fans cheering him on for his final collegiate appearance.
Kevin Sapien
Offensive Lineman
Sophomore
Torrance, Calif.
Sapien has become a solid addition to the “reformed” offensive line and one of three underclassman to consistently provide protection for red shirt freshman quarterback Kellen Moore.
Chris O’Neill
Tight End
Senior
Moraga, Calif.
Before suffering from a broken foot against Louisiana Tech just four games into the season, O’Neill was an important offensive weapon. He grabbed 10 receptions and two touchdowns.
Ellis Powers
Safety
Senior
Lakewood, Calif.
Powers is second in tackles for the Broncos with 71 total during the regular season. He recorded a career high 11 tackles against Oregon and recorded his first interception during his final game at Bronco Stadium. He started in all but one game this season.
Ryan Winterswyk
Defensive End
Sophomore
La Habra, Calif.
This quick defensive end led the Broncos with 4.5 sacks and was busy applying pressure to quarterbacks all season. Winterswyk also led the team with 10 tackles for loss.
MARY ALBL AND KIRK BELL
