In a Marilyn Monroe-esqe white dress, Shelley tiptoes off the sidewalk and onto the road. “I think I dropped some money,” she says, “Maybe it’s over here by this manhole.” Then Shelley pulls a Marilyn Monroe as she steps on the manhole. Steam fills her dress, blowing it up in the air, while Shelley holds the front of it down.
Startled, Shelley yells, “Ahhhh, that is freaking hot.” This scene from “House Bunny” perfectly demonstrates the comedic genius of the movie and it’s starlet, Anna Farris.
After celebrating her 27th birthday, Shelley a playboy bunny living in the Playboy Mansion, is kicked out for being too old. She is 59 in bunny years!
Heartbroken, and with no money, Shelley stumbles upon “a bunch of little playboy mansions,” which can also be called sorority houses. Soon Shelley becomes the housemother of Zeta Alpha Zeta, a sorority known for being socially challenged. Shelley and the girls of Zeta then begin their quest to stop the Zeta house from closing, while trying to get a normal guy to fall for Shelley. The girls must also battle the Pi Alpha Mu sorority.
Farris is perfectly cast as carefree, big-haired, ditzy ex-Playboy bunny Shelley. Farris portrays Shelley convincingly. She is likeable and intelligently stupid, all while showing vulnerability and innocence. Farris is a gem in comedy, seldom seen in movies these days. This isn’t the first time Farris has ventured into the kingdom of comedy. Farris has been making people roll on the floor with laughter since her comedic debut in the first “Scary Movie.”
Rising stars Emma Stone and Kat Dennings add to the strength of the film with their supporting roles. These two actresses are part of the next wave of movie star and each plays their roles to the tee. Emma Stone, known for her role in “Superbad,” is Natalie. Stone shines as the adorable president of Zeta Alpha Zeta. Dennings is Mona, the feisty naysayer of the Zeta.
The from “geek to glamorous” theme has been seen many times before, but “House Bunny” offers a fresh taste for everyone. Interesting enough, the movie even mentions our great state. While at a club, Carrie Mae delivers a great one liner about Idaho that had all of the people in the Boise movie theater I watched it in laughing.
“The House Bunny” will be shown Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. in the SPEC.
