The Latin American film series recently concluded for the Fall 2008 semester. Nicanor Dominguez, a professor with the History Department describes the Latin American Film series as a “coordinated effort of a group of faculty from different departments at BSU to show films and generate discussion and interest among students and community members about Latin America. Concurrently, our aim has been to generate interest for the recently approved Latin American and Latino/a Studies Minor (LALS MIN, housed at the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures).”
The film series started during the 2006-2007 school year by Professor Adrian Kane, Modern Languages, Dominguez and fellow faculty members Professor Dora Ramirez-Dhoore, English; Professor Arthur Scarritt, Sociology; and Professor Brian Wampler, Political Science all joined the project in the spring of 2008. Each professor added their own expertise and presented 11 films total.
Dominguez is hesitant to stamp the Fall Semester’s film series as a success.
“The film series had a variable degree of success, ranging from 5 to 20 viewers, depending on the date. Faculty announce the films in their classes and sometimes offer extra credit to those students who attend,” he said.
A different film was shown each Wednesday with the history of Mexico serving as the series’ general theme. The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and the Cultural Center sponsored the series this semester. Dominguez credits the Cultural Center for all of their help. “Since the beginning of the series, we have counted on the support of [Cultural Center Coordinator] Ro Parker,” Dominguez said.
The Latin American Film Series will return next semester.
“The five faculty that conform the core of the Latin American and Latino/a Studies Minor needs to meet and define a group of films regarding a new topic for Spring 2009,” Dominguez said.
Dominguez also hints the films will connect to issues of human rights and citizenship in Latin America.
As for the time and place for next semester’s film series: “We will try to maintain the same place, day and time for the screenings, although we need to coordinate those details with the Cultural Center,” Dominguez said.
