PRO Proposition 8

The family is the most basic and fundamental unit of society. It is the foundation upon which the world rests. Marriage between a man and a woman is at the center of the family. Without marriage, there could be no family.

Marriage is clearly defined in not just the dictionary, but in society, as a union between a man and a woman. Californians recently proved this point for the second time by voting to amend their definition of marriage to: “Only Marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

To refer to marriage in any other way, including same sex marriage, would be to redefine the word and take away from its meaning and value. If we all decided to start referring to dollars as pennies what effect would that have on the economy?

When I say that I do not believe that same sex couples should not be married it is because they cannot be married. Marriage is a simple recipe with only a few, easy to find ingredients. Without all the ingredients, how could we call it marriage? Can you call them chocolate chip cookies if you don’t have any chocolate chips?

I can honestly say that on this subject I do not hope to portray any negative feelings towards the homosexual community. Though I do not agree with their lifestyle, I enjoy the freedoms this country has to offer and would not try to take away any of your freedoms. I cannot however allow the values of marriage to be compromised. This isn’t about being ultra conservative, or being narrow-minded. I can accept the fact that others will do things that I cannot agree with and that it is within their rights to do so.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, a major supporter of Proposition 8 in California issued a statement on the issue and made their feelings about the rights of the gay community very clear to those who would hear.

“The Church does not object to rights (already established in California) regarding hospitalization and medical care, fair housing and employment rights, or probate rights, so long as these do not infringe on the integrity of the family or the constitutional rights of churches and their adherents to administer and practice their religion free from government interference,” said the LDS church.

Gay couples in California and other states across the nation can live together and enjoy every civil opportunity that married men and women do. They cannot be married however, it simply does not work.
