Boise State Swimming and Diving team falls to San Jose State

Story
Despite its best efforts the Boise State swimming and diving team fell to Western Athletic Conference foe, San Jose State, 197-102, Saturday.
While the swimming portion of the competition was Saturday, the diving portion of the event took place Friday night at the Stanford’s Avery Aquatic Center. Leading the way for the Broncos in the 1-meter was Brittney Jones, as she placed third with a career-high score of 209.33, while teammate Erin Lionberger took fourth after tallying 193.73.
The 3-meter followed with Jones taking third yet again with a 217.28, followed by Lionberger in fourth after posting a score of 203.18.
Kicking off the meet was the 200 medley relay which featured the talents of Denise Green, Tara Hahto, Chelsea Lopus and Stephanie North. The quartette finished the event in second place with a time of 1:48.03, marking the second-best time in school history.
The first individual event of the day showcased the talents of the distance swimmers with the 1000 freestyle. Leading the way for the Broncos was junior Katleyn Lofland as she placed third after clocking a time of 10:36.99. Teammate Rachael Meisner took fourth with a season-best time of 10:42.74, while freshman Paige LaPorte notched sixth with a career-best time of 11:01.13.
The 200 freestyle followed with freshman Amber Boucher leading a quartette of Broncos in the event with a fourth place finish with a time of 1:57.16. Also making her mark in the event was Green as she clocked a career-best time of 1:57.69 to take fifth, while teammate Jenny Nowatzke also recorded a personal-best 1:58.22 to finish sixth.
It was freshman Morgan McLain that led the way in the 100 backstroke as she notched a third place finish after clocking a time of 59.54.
The highlight of the day came during the 100 breaststroke as Emily Irvin proved to be a force to be reckoned with as she blew the competition out of the water with a career-best 1:04.89, beating out the competition by nearly three seconds. Irvin’s time not only marked a personal best, but set a school record as well.
Keeping up with the record-breaking day was Lopus, who recorded a career-best time of 2:07.20 in the 200 butterfly to place second. Making her debut in the event, was freshman Kirdy Franco, who clocked a time of 2:12.70 to take fourth.
Sprinting her way up the charts was North as she notched a second place finish in the 50 free with a time of 24.31, before she returned to the starting blocks for the 100 free, where she took the title after clocking a time of 52.19.
Leading the way in the 200 back was Green, as she finished the event with a third place finish as she touched the wall at the 2:09.00 mark.
The 200 breast was an event for the record books as Hahto notched a season-best time of 2:24.25 to take third, outreaching teammate Erin Stotts who placed fourth after clocking a career-best 2:24.45. Not to be overshadowed was Irvin as she also recorded a career-best time of 2:27.77 in the event to place fifth.
During the 500 free, Meisner led the Broncos with a fourth place finish with a time of 5:14.84, while Lofland took sixth with a time of 5:19.04 and LaPorte garnered seventh.
The record breaking continued as Franco set a personal-best in the 100 fly as she finished the event with a time of 59.04 to take second.
It was during the 200 individual medley that Lopus showcased her talent as she notched a second place finish with a time of 2:09.80. Also proving to be a force was Irvin, who clocked a personal-best 2:10.46 to take third.
Closing out the event was the 200 free relay, where the Broncos dominated the competition as they took the title with a record-breaking time of 1:37.93 (North, Boucher, Sammy Sanchez-O’Dell and Morgan McLain).
Boise State will take two weeks off from competition and return home to prepare for Fresno State. The Broncos host the Bulldogs Saturday, Nov. 15, at the West YMCA.
