U.S. spells out warning to Iraq if agreement on American
forces fails

BAGHDAD – Army Gen. Ray Odierno, the top U.S. military commander in Iraq, informed Iraqi officials last week that if their country doesn’t agree to a new agreement governing American forces in Iraq, it would lose $6.3 billion in aid for construction, security forces and economic activity, and another $10 billion a year in foreign military sales.

A three-page list shown to McClatchy Newspapers Monday spelled out the warning. Iraqi officials consider the threat serious and worry the impasse over the so-called status of forces agreement could lead to a crisis in Iraq. Without a new agreement or a renewed United Nations mandate, the U.S. military presence would become an illegal occupation under international law.

For Palestinians, home soccer game symbolizes ultimate goal

RAMALLAH, West Bank – Millions of Palestinians around the world still wait for the day when they can celebrate the birth of an independent homeland.

Last weekend, they at least got to celebrate their first home soccer game.

In an historic event, the Palestinian national soccer team took to the field Sunday to host its first internationally-blessed home game at a refurbished stadium near Jerusalem.

“We don’t need a state to show that we represent Palestine,” goalkeeper Fahed Fakhoury said Thursday, Oct. 23 as his teammates wrapped up practice on a soggy field. “Palestine is in our heart. We’re not going to wait for a state to represent Palestine.”

Couple plead not guilty in daughter’s starvation

SEATTLE – A Carnation, Wash., couple accused of starving their 14-year-old daughter tightly clutched hands Monday when they appeared in a Seattle courtroom.

Jon Pomeroy, 43 and his wife, Rebecca Long, 44, each pleaded not guilty to criminal-mistreatment charges and then ducked down a back stairwell at the King County Courthouse. The Carnation couple were charged earlier this month with isolating and starving the 14-year-old girl.

The girl, who was 4 foot 7 and weighed just 48 pounds when authorities found her in August, suffered dehydration so severe all her teeth were rotting, court documents state. It was the worst case of abuse the veteran King County sheriff’s detective assigned to the case said he had ever seen.

King County sheriff’s deputies discovered the malnourished girl Aug. 13 after Child Protective Services requested they check on the home.

McCain, Palin call on Stevens to step down

WASHINGTON – Wasting no time to separate his presidential campaign from what he described as the “corruption and insider dealing that has become so pervasive in our nation’s capital,” Sen. John McCain called Tuesday on his fellow Republican, Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens, to step down from the Senate.

A jury in Washington convicted Stevens, 84, Monday of failing to report thousands of dollars in freebies, including renovations that doubled the size of his home. Stevens vowed to appeal the seven felony convictions and press on with his own re-election campaign in the week leading up to the Nov. 4 election. He’s only the fifth sitting senator to be convicted of such a serious crime.

“It is clear that Sen. Stevens has broken his trust with the people and that he should now step down,” McCain said. “I hope that my colleagues in the Senate will be spurred by these events to redouble their efforts to end this kind of corruption once and for all.”

Bridge collapses, 14 injured

NAMPA – Fourteen construction crew members working on the Robinson Boulevard highway overpass were injured after a section of the structure collapsed to the ground Monday afternoon.

None of the workers were seriously hurt, officials said, with broken bones and lacerations accounting for the most serious injuries. By late Monday evening, all but three of the workers had been released from the hospital, according to officials from Graham Construction, the Spokane company working on the bridge project.

The workers were apparently pouring concrete on the bridge structure when it collapsed about 30 feet for reasons that are still under investigation.

“The outcome could have been tragically [worse],” Nampa Deputy Fire Chief Doug Strosnider said. “That’s a pretty good fall. I don’t know how many feet that was, but I’m glad I wasn’t on it.”

BSU professor honored as 2008 Art Educator of the Year

The Idaho Art Education Association honored Boise State University professor Kathleen Keys of the Department of Art as the 2008 Art Educator of the Year.

“We are very fortunate as an association to have this great teacher as a member and colleague,” IAEA President Joni Cashman wrote in Keys’ award letter. “She has contributed to our organization on many occasions with her time and energy, for which we are grateful.”

Keys has a bachelor’s degree in arts administration and a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting from the University of Kentucky, as well as a master’s in arts policy and administration and a Ph.D. in art education from Ohio State University.

What The?

It looks like one of us put in a lot of effort

A man applying for a job included what he claimed were samples of his work, which, by an unfortunate coincidence, were actually done by the person who was interviewing him.

You’ll never catch me, copper! Screech!

An intoxicated woman stopped her car at a red light in Wichita, Kan., at 1 a.m. and fell asleep with the engine running.

Another driver called the cops, who came and put spikes in front of her rear tires then woke her up. She hit the gas to flee and
shredded her tires.
