Starting fall semester 2009 Boise State will go to a smoke-free campus. We asked students what they thought about the ban and if they thought restricted areas
(instead of a complete ban) would be a better policy.
Alex English
Senior/Electrical Engineering
“Frankly I don’t like it when I’m walking to class and somebody walks by me and they’re huffing away getting it in my face … I think restricted areas would be OK as long as it’s away from where people are walking.”
Brad Muri
Sophomore/Physical Education
“I don’t smoke, so I kind of like it but at the same time it kind of might feel like people who smoke, their rights are taken away. But I think it’s good for the majority of the people that don’t have to walk in somebody’s path.”
Catherine Lewis
Sophomore/Math
“I’m very against it. I’m actually working right now to try and work up a petition or something against it … I think if they had designated smoking areas it would go over a lot better.”
Eva Matuszyk
Freshman/Pre-Nursing
“[It] doesn’t really affect me so I don’t really care … I think they should put restricted areas so basically anyone who doesn’t want to be around it just doesn’t go in that specific area.”
Matt Monroe
Sophomore/Computer Science
“Personally I don’t like walking through the Quad or something like that and having to breathe in other people’s second hand smoke, but, I mean, I don’t think that a blanket ban is the right way to go.”
