Dear Boise State Students,

Your student run lecture series committee Vox Discipuli – Latin for ’student voice’ – needs your help. Our mission is to present lectures, debates and panel discussions on contemporary topics relevant to students. We want to make sure you’re satisfied with our choices for speakers and programming, and we want your input on next semester’s speaker(s).

Some of you may have attended our inaugural lecture last semester when we brought former CENTCOM Commander, (Ret.) US General John Abizaid. The General spoke about diplomacy, the military, and the future of the Middle East. He gave us an expert’s overview of the war, then in its fifth year.

If you joined us for dinner with Abizaid you heard him compliment our generation on being composed of pragmatic problem solvers. He said he has led us on the battlefield and in classrooms and is confident our generation will lead America with distinction.

You may have also attended the “Red versus Blue” political debate between conservative journalist Jonah Goldberg and liberal journalist Peter Beinart. They provided an entertaining discussion on the political divide in this country and presented contrasting views on the central problems America and the rest of the world face.

Mr. Goldberg reminded us that politics is not the whole of who we are and that political discourse does not have to be banned from the dinner table. We wanted students and our community to benefit by hearing a thoughtful, passionate and informative debate on the issues between representatives of both major political ideologies.

Our committee is in the process of selecting a speaker, or speakers, for next semester. We’d like to bring someone who can address the economy and give us an understanding of the global financial crisis, and perhaps share how each of us can do our part to help get things back on track.

If you have a speaker in mind you’d like our committee to consider, please email your suggestion, along with an explanation of your choice (around 200 words). Send suggestions or questions to voxdiscipuli@boisestate.edu by November 7, and finalists will be announced December 1 in The Arbiter.

If you want to be involved with the committee, we are looking for new committee members and interns. Requirements include: minimum 3.0 GPA, full year commitment, and demonstrated student leadership or academic achievement on campus.

E-mail us at voxdiscipuli@boisestate.edu to submit your speaker suggestions and to inquire further about becoming a member of Vox Discipuli.

The committee is eager to hear from you. We have an amazing opportunity to engage the great minds of our time and enrich our education. Thank you for your time and effort in aiding in that endeavor.

Sincerely,

Vox Discipuli Student
