For only $1 per student, the Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity hopes to aid survivors of sexual abuse and domestic violence.
This week, AKL hosts their semi-annual “These Hands Don’t Hurt” event on the Quad. The fraternity asks students to donate $1 to go to the Women’s and Children’s Alliance.
“This is like our promise wall so when people donate a dollar we ask them to put their hand on the wall to promise that it won’t be used in violence against others,” AKL Philanthropy Chair Brody Ashton said.
According to Rebecca Taguma, Women’s and Children’s Alliance public relations manager, AKL donates between $500 and $700 every semester.
“All the money is going to the Women’s and Children’s Alliance,” AKL pledge Karlo Mercene said.
Taguma said the money helps fund a variety of programs such as life skills education courses, counseling, case management and a shelter.
But the money, programs and hands on the wall are just a starting point. Ashton said there is much men can do to stop violence around them.
“I think it’s important just to stand up, even if you’re around other guys and something is said that’s sexist or derogatory, even in a jest manner of domestic violence,” he said. “You [should] come out and say something.”
Running the fundraiser, Taguma said, is a step in the right direction.
“One thing we [WCA] think is so neat is that a fraternity has taken this on as a cause,” she said. “We think it’s really cool that there are men in our community who are standing up and saying that it’s not OK [to promote sexual/domestic violence].”
