


Last Thursday night the volleyball team squeaked out a win over Fresno State, while Saturday they fell to University of Nevada – Reno in four matches.
Fresno State
BSU played their tightest match of the season thus far Thursday night when they fought to a five-set match win over Western Athletic Conference opponent Fresno State.
The Broncos (5-10, 2-3 WAC) battled to a 27-25, 24-26, 25-19, 25-27, 15-12 victory over the Bulldogs (5-9, 2-3 WAC) at the Save Mart Center, which earned them their second WAC win of the season.
Sophomore middle blocker Sadie Maughan did some damage for the Broncos, recording an outstanding match-high hitting percentage of .438 with eight kills on the night.
Maughan was also dominant at the net defensively, picking up her second match-high of 11 blocks (one solo).
Freshman Elizabeth Griffin aided in the Broncos’ win just as much, recording the Broncos’ first double-double of the season with a team high of 15 kills (.188 percentage) and adding 13 digs. Griffin also added five blocks (one solo) and one service ace in the five set win.
“Griffin played really well for us tonight,” head coach Robin Davis said. “Our MVP for the night was Jeanette Jenkins, though. She hit really well after moving to the right side and served really tough. Jeanene Rose also played really well in the backcourt for us, adding eight digs.”
Jenkins and sophomore Alisha King each added nine kills to the Broncos’ efforts while sophomore libero Lauren Hamm contributed a team high of 18 digs and two service aces.
Freshman Lydia Blaha recorded a team high of two solo blocks (six assisted) while senior Mandy Klein added 38 set assists on the night.
The Broncos recorded 45 total kills (.187), five service aces and 5 digs while also adding 20 team blocks to the mix.
Nevada
Saturday night the team wasn’t able to hold on the way they did Thursday, dropping their first match of the season against Nevada, 3-1.
The Broncos played tight sets with the Wolf Pack (6-9, 2-4 WAC) but couldn’t hold off the 25-21, 25-16, 21-25, 25-18 win by Nevada at the Virginia Street Gym.
BSU was able to produce 44 kills (.159 percentage) while recording 50 digs and 11 team blocks.
Their strongest set was the first when they tallied 13 kills and a .214 hitting percentage.
Jenkins and Grffin led the Broncos with 10 kills each, while Jenkins also recorded a solid .222 hitting percentage.
Maughan was shy of the team high by one kill, but led the team in hitting percentage with .500.
Jenkins also led the team in blocks, recording five (two solo) while Blaha added four blocks. Freshman Amanda Remy was outstanding in the backcourt, recording a career high 12 digs.
The Broncos return home to host San Jose State, a team they are 1-0 against this season, Thursday, Oct. 9.
They will also host Utah State Saturday, Oct. 11, with both matches at Bronco Gym at 7 p.m.
