Sick of the mundane ritual that is your workout regiment? The quest to attain and manage a healthy lifestyle is of the utmost importance, but finding the time while also sustaining the required dedication to the task can seem unnerving. Take a chance and explore the amusement that comes from a dose of fresh calisthenics.

The Student Recreation Center offers many classes to help students, staff and others keep fit. They also offer alternatives to the typical fitness class. The various instructional programs challenge participants to think outside the box for their workout. Salsa, belly dancing, hula-hoop and clogging are among some of the classes offered through this unique instructional program.

Kate Shaine, a fitness coordinator for Campus Recreation, said the classes are offered because “we have just had a lot of interest. [They are] above and beyond, a different way to get a workout. [They are] a different type of fitness class. They are new, fun, and unique.”

Many of the classes have history at Campus Recreation and have gained great popularity with each successful year.

“Especially with the belly dance. We have found that people really enjoyed it. The class is full every semester. The hula-hoop class has lots of interest. It has really taken off this year. The new clogging class is a great addition as it is a different type of dance class,” Shaine said.

Perhaps, the most popular of them all is the salsa class. “The salsa class has always been popular. We have had it for a few years. We are gaining new customers each year, but there are always some of the same people who come. They just love it; the dancing, the instructors and the atmosphere,” Shaine said.

Not only do these classes offer a fun way to keep fit, they exude cultural value. Salsa, belly dancing and clogging are rich in foreign culture, bringing a different flavor to the Boise State campus.

The zest propelled by the various world experiences available through the classes is obviously appreciated by students and other participants alike.

“[The classes] are definitely drawing in participants from different backgrounds with different interests. The instructional program broadens what we have to offer and that is a great thing to do,” Shaine said.

The eight-week sessions for many of these classes start this week, so hurry and sign up. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to mix fun with fitness. For online registration and a complete listing of the classes, visit rec.boisestate.edu/fitness/instruction.
