The Boise State swimming and diving team kicked off its season with a splash when they shattered several school records. Despite their accomplishments, they fell to the University of Utah and the University of Washington last Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
This was a great start to our season,” head coach Kristin Hill said. “We were a little flat today compared to last night, but it’s something that we learn from and with it being so early in the season, it is something we will overcome. There were still some good swims and we took a lot from this meet that will allow us to be better over the months to come.”
Friday night freshman Erin Lionberger finished second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 218.99, while Brittney Jones placed fifth with a 202.72.
Tana Loan made her diving debut and scored a 159.60 to notch seventh place.
The highlight of the night came for BSU when they set a school record with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.46 (Denise Green, Tara Hahto, Chelsea Lopus, Amber Boucher).
Just three lanes over was the Bronco relay team that took third with the second-best time in the record books with a 1:48.91 (Morgan McLain, Sammy Sanchez-O’Dell, Emily Irivin, Stephanie North).
“The highlights were many, but starting off with a team record in the 200 medley relay was unexpected and a lot of fun,” Hill said.
Saturday afternoon the Broncos continued their success in 400 medley relay.
While the competition was fierce, the Broncos recorded the third-best time in school history with a time of 4:01.93 (McLain, Hahto, Sanchez-O’Dell, North), which was good enough for fifth.
In the 100 breast freshman Emily Irvin made her presence known as she recorded a 1:07.36 to finish the event in second overall.
Not to be overshadowed was senior team captain Lauren Keele who recorded a third placed finish with a time of 1:07.99, just two-hundredths of a second behind her career best.
Closing out the two-day event was the diving competition as the women looked to make a splash on the 1-meter boards.
The Broncos sprung into action with Lionberger leading the way with a second place finish after tallying a score of 209.32. Not to be outdone was Jones, who placed third with a total of 197.99, while Loan finished seventh after posting a score of 161.70.
“We weren’t afraid to get up and race teams that are a step or two ahead of us and that’s admirable in our team,” Hill said.
“This is a great group of women and it’s going to be an amazing season.”
The Broncos will not get much of a break in the competition as they prepare for the WAC Shootout hosted by New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M.
The two-day competition begins Friday, Oct. 10 and concludes Saturday, Oct. 11.
