Softball squad hits the diamond

A brand new Boise State University softball program did not let the crowd down on Saturday in its first ever doubleheader at Northwest Nazarene University.

First year jitters were not present at all and BSU bats were flying as the lady’s collected back-to-back wins against the College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon University.

While most teams have some sort of pre-game ritual to get everyone focused on the task at hand, the first year Broncos are no different.

“When we stretch before every game, we go through everyone and tell our goals, both personal goals and team goals,” freshman centerfielder Megan Suitos said.

If the teams goal had been to come out with a bang in the 2008 season, their goal was definitely achieved Saturday.

The traditional BSU cheers sang through the fans as the Broncos beat the Yotes 7-1 and the Mountaineers an easy 17-1.
Suitos praised her team’s first performance of the day against the Yotes with enthusiasm.

“It was amazing! We executed so well. We had key hits when we needed them, and sacrifices when needed. We really did our jobs.”

Suitos brought her game early against the Mountaineers. With a first-base hit, two steals, and a score off of a sacrifice fly ball from junior Kathy Cox, the Broncos took advantage of the early momentum.

By the third inning, a pop into right field, a double for an RBI, and a triple put the Broncos up 4-0.

The fourth inning brought even more pain to the Mountaineers as doubles, triples, and a couple more RBIs put the Broncos even more ahead.

A forty-minute fifth inning gave several players moments to shine. After a sacrifice bunt from freshman Kelly Sweeney, singles from junior Laeha Hill, junior Laurel Wyatt, freshman Ashleigh Viers-Gordillo and junior Kelsey Perkins, the team was in full swing. Both Sweeney and Cox were walked with the bases loaded for another score each. The inning ended with BSU up 17-0, and left many fans wondering when the beating was ever going to stop.

Speculations ran through the crowd as to whether the umpire was going to call the game. EO coach Missy Wheeler offered to play one more inning. The result: one RBI for a final score of 17-1.

“It was a good game for us to practice our fundamentals,” Suitos said. “We really came together as a unit today.”

The Broncos will be playing again in Caldwell against the College of Southern Idaho on Friday, October 10 at 5 p.m. They also have a doubleheader on Saturday, October 11 against the Yotes and CSI at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. These exhibition games are the official opening to the fall season in preparation of the introductory 2009 season, which will begin in February.
