Thursday, Sept. 25 marks the first day of the 2008 Idaho International Film Festival. The festival will extend from Sept. 25 – 28 and will feature more than 30 local and international films. Local director and producer Michael D. Gough will debut his first film in the festival.

“America’s Core” is a documentary about Drum and Bugle Corps, or more specifically, the Troopers, based out of Casper, Wyo. It was filmed in 21 states for two and a half months. Gough shot and directed more than 80 hours of film and edited it down to 1 hour and 45 minutes.

“It really enlightens people and connects people with something they don’t normally connect with, Gough said. “I wanted to enlighten the general public into something they know little about … The physical training in the shows, the leadership skills and the relationships […] It’s about a group who came up from the ashes, and a prestigious 50-year history. It was a complete reorganization of the Troopers to pull themselves up higher than they were before.”

The fact that Idaho has no Drum and Bugle Corps was one of Gough’s main reasons for choosing the Idaho International Film Festival as a venue.

“America’s Core” is not the only project Gough helped bring to the festival. “Sanguinarian,” a movie based on a vampire’s journey to self-discovery, will also be shown. Gough worked extensively through different aspects of the film from cinematography to sound editing.

Gough has worked on eight films; he produced three and directed two. The film festival is one of the first avenues that gave Gough direction in filmmaking.

“The Idaho International Film Festival is one of the first places I got started,” Gough said. “I met a lot of people and it was a lot of fun. It gave me a chance to promote myself and projects I was working on.”

He further described the difficulties with filmmaking in Boise.

“Talent is hard to come by as well as access to equipment …” Gough said. “Everybody’s capable of doing it, it just takes time and dedication.”

The festival will encompass the entire downtown Boise area. Films will show at the Egyptian Theatre, the Flicks and Edward’s Downtown 9. There will be workshops, seminars and parties to meet people in the industry.

“Americas’ Core” will show at the Egyptian Theatre Sept. 28 at 2:15 p.m. and “Sanguinarian” will play Sept. 25, also at the Egyptian, at 9:15 p.m.
