This academic year, the Broncos hit the ground running with 42 new tenure-track faculty members. Each addition brings an abundance of experience and new teaching techniques.

Vice President of University Advancement Howard Smith commented on the resumes of the new faculty.

“[The large number of new faculty] is impressive confirmation of where we are going,” Smith said. “Quality is very important if we are going to serve students well.”

In addition to growth, Smith said the new faculties are important because they bring fresh ideas and experiences. Many, he said, have already been recognized for their teaching or research.

“Bright minds generate exciting projects for funding,” he said.

One of these bright new minds is Andres Caicedo.

Caicedo is one of the two new additions to the Boise State Math Department. He visited Boise State prior to transferring to the university, and he is well aware of student frustration with the Math Department.

“My understanding is that the Math Department is already taking several steps to address the problems that need to be,” Caicedo said.

At the beginning of the semester Caicedo and other faculty members met together to create some short term and long term plans for the Math Department.

“Part of the idea is to work closer with the department to make sure that the problems students are having can be addressed more directly,” Caicedo said.

Caicedo said that he tries to be very open with the students and helps students who might not be on the same level when they enter a course.

Caicedo received his undergraduate degree at Colombia, and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. After school he taught in Austria and then taught math at Caltech before settling with his family in Boise.

The other 41 faculty members are spread throughout the academic colleges. Each one brings Boise State closer to becoming a “Metropolitan Research University of Distinction.”
